There has been a mystery sew-along going on this summer that I have been keeping my eyes on. It is Coriander Quilts Border of the Month sew-along. I adore Corey Yoder and enjoy both her fabric collections and regular Saturday morning YouTube videos. I am typically a bit leary of mystery quilts, and tend to let them go on for a while until I see the direction the quilt is going, and then either join in or opt out. How many times have I made a “mystery quilt” that I ended up not loving?

The concept of this quilt is that you start with a center checkerboard square and build borders around it each month. Corey has now provided four border surrounds for the checkerboard center and I really like the look of her quilt.

The first border is two strips of background and a slate grey solid. I had to order the grey fabric, so I have not added that yet. The second border is this collection of sixteen simple blocks. Corey has two versions of the quilt: one completely scrappy, and the other version where the colors are more controlled. I like the color-controlled look.
It only took a few hours to make these sixteen simple square blocks.

What do you think? Are you doing this easy project? Are you tempted? The sewing goes quite fast, and the final size of the quilt is not large, 60-some inches square. It would be a great way to use up scraps. Oh, and you can make it with a layer cake! You need less than 1 1/2 yds of background and a bit of that grey fabric I mentioned.

Corey is using her In the Garden fabric collection, and I am using a layer cake of Fig Tree’s Fruit Cocktail that I had in a drawer. I think the results will be a winner!
