What do you do when you are down and out? You make cookies; that is what you do. My cookie of choice was Oatmeal Raisin. I have had a craving for that cookie lately, which I happily indulged in yesterday. Eva doesn’t care for raisins, so I have not made this recipe for years. She hasn’t been around so much lately, so I just dove in and made a batch.
Speaking of Eva, she was off at a swim meet yesterday, and her dad texted in high glee that she had come in first in both the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle! The girl is strong, she is fast, and we are so proud of her!

Ok, back to cookies. The recipe I used is in the 100 Cookies book by Sarah Kieffer. This is a very nice basic cookie cookbook, with recipes for lots of classic and favorite cookies. The recipe in the book for Oatmeal Raisin cookies was perfectly standard; you can find a similar recipe online anywhere, and you probably even have your own recipe somewhere that would be great. The point is, find a recipe for oatmeal raisin cookies and make some. You won’t be sorry.
Oatmeal raisin cookies are so darn satisfying. They are soft and chewy, and full of raisiny goodness. How can anyone not like raisins? This recipe did not call for walnuts, but they would have been a nice addition. My nutless oatmeal raisin cookies totally hit the spot, and I have been having them for a snack, for breakfast, and for dessert. Dennis says they are the best cookies I have ever made. Whether or not that is true, we have been doing our very best to test them at every opportunity.
They haven’t cured what ails me, but I have enjoyed trying to see if they would do the job.
Have a great weekend, everyone.

Nicole ! So glad to hear that you whipped up a batch of happy for yourself! You certainly deserve a treat. The “raisiny goodness” part brought a smile to my face. Not one of my three children liked raisins (genetics??), so we subbed chocolate chips!
If Eva was helping me make them we would have subbed in choc chips for sure.
Your cookies made my mouth water, I can’t remember the last time I baked cookies of any kind. Congratulations to Eva! Such fun to hear about grandchildren’s accomplishments. Have a good weekend!
You too Sandra. It is so easy to brag about our grand kids, isn’t it?
While my husband would have scarfed them all down, crasins or tart dried cherries would be my preference (but i still would have eaten two or three to be polite)
I love the idea of dried cherries! Craisins are great too, but cherries are so unexpected.
oatmeal raisin cookies- the perfect breakfast food!
I’ve had one for breakfast every day since i made them!
Congratulations on the wins, Eva! 🏊♀️ For your next cookie project try Cowboy Cookies! They’re Oatmeal Raisins with added walnuts, chocolate chips & coconut! I actually sub dried cranberries for the raisins. Have a great weekend!
I think I have made those in the past. I did kind of want walnuts too, and I bet I could have tossed in a handful with this batch. I am going to try dried cranberries too.
I’m one of those odd people who does not like raisins. I made of batch of oatmeal cookies a couple of weeks ago and I used chocolate chips instead. I also used the old fashioned oats. They were so good and chewy. Just reading your blog has made me want to make a batch today!
Have a good weekend.
Eva dislikes raisins, so when a recipe calls for them we have substituted chocolate chips. She wasn’t around this week so my husband and I really enjoyed those raisins!
it’s always a good time for cookies…..cookie monster is my hero.
lol Same.
Anyone else boil their raisins before adding them to the cookie dough?
My grandmas did, so I do too.
Cleaned out my mom’s attic Sunday. It is now empty. Decluttered her garage today, huge trip to the resale shop. Helping a friend get ready for a garage sale. I feel surrounded by junk!
Hi Vickie — yes! I boil my raisins just for like 3 minutes. They plump up so beautifully. This is an important step if your raisins have been in the cupboard for a few weeks…. or months….. and need to be “rejuvenated”!!
I have never boiled my raisins in advance, but what a good idea if they are old and dried out!
I use the same recipe for oatmeal cookies and sometimes I use craisins and sometimes I use chocolate chips. The recipe simply makes too many cookies for just my husband and myself so I used a cookie scoop and placed them on cookie sheets and flash freeze them, then transfer to a container in the freezer. I bake them by adding one minute to the original cooking time and can make a few cookies at a time, or more, and can always have fresh cookies to eat, or make when unexpected company drops by.
This is a great idea
I used a 2T capacity scoop and made the cookies nice and big. I love having a cookie as big as my hand! I probably should have frozen some, but Dennis and I seem to be keeping up with the volume…
