Little Village Week One

These are the first four blocks in the Little Village Sew Along designed and hosted by Jessica Dayon. Did you notice that I switched things up a bit?

This was my first block, where I used a solid light for the six-inch "barn block". I have a ton of low volume/mid value red and white prints in my stash and I had to re-think my original choice to use the solid. I swapped out the flying geese pinwheel block for one using a red and white print and was happy with the result.

I think the print adds a bit more interest.

I am making my blocks with red fabric that I had in my stash.  It is a variety of reds from several Minick and Simpson collections.  However, if you wanted to make this quilt with a newly released group (readily available), there is one that would be perfect. Have you seen Redwork Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings

See what I mean? This collection would look amazing for this project.

A reader named Sue commented yesterday that a house block quilt was the perfect quilt to commemorate a year of staying home sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Truer words were never spoken! I think whatever you chose to make the Little Village quilt, it would look fabulous!

UPDATE:  I am getting all sorts of emails asking how to get the instructions for making these house blocks and how to participate in the sew-along. The bold and underlined text in my post that says "Little Village Sew Along" is called a LINK. If you click on the text you will be taken to the blog of Jessica Dayon, the designer hosting the sew-along. She has all the instructions and fabric requirements on her blog site

  1. Moda and/or Carrie Nelson re-released her “Village “pattern for free during the quarantine and there was a QAL in remembrance of 2020. I participated in that sew along but I do like Jessica Dayon’s house blocks.

  2. Great idea for a “house quilt” to do in conjunction with the virus-quarantine time of our life. Your fabrics look great. I have an aversion to house blocks since my initial beginning quilt class. I paid a lot for my Marti Michelle house block but found I did not care for that type of block assembly. But I might should make one house-block to mark these trying times and fold it into another quilt of blocks or perhaps a pillow.

  3. I do like your swapped flying geese pinwheel blocks. That’s a cute block in any color but it looks nice in the red & white print. So many ideas…with so much time to work on them during our stay-in-the-house times! 🏡

  4. Your blocks look great. You sure work fast!! And you have an amazing stash! I look forward to seeing you build this red and white neighborhood.

  5. oh, yes! those are beautiful. I’ve made one quilt of houses and have a second one ready to sew together…all to commemorate 2020. Listening to Dr. Fauci speak it sounds like 2021 will be a rough year too. 🙁 Our gov’t has really failed us.

  6. Thank you for the heads up regarding this sew along. It is always fun to read your blog. I am typically a “lurker” but this post inspired a comment.
