Out of My Comfort Zone

My color palette is usually more subdued than the quilt in progress shown above.  So, to say that this project is a bit out of my comfort zone, would be accurate.  Reminiscent of a hot summer day in Provence, it is exuberant and cheerful and colorful.  And LOUD.  I struggled to come to terms with this quilt top, first trying scrappy light background small prints for the alternating squares.  Eeek!  Way too much going on.  I switched to a sunny bright yellow and was happier with the look.  Now I am auditioning borders and think I have hit upon something good.

Interesting, the colors in this quilt are not terribly dissimilar to
the colors in yesterday’s Square in a Square quilt, but I like that one
ever so much more.  It is much less "in my face".  Overall, this is a nice little quilt, but just not quite my thing.  I feel as if it is trying too hard to be loved, like a pushy puppy.  I hope to find a home for it–I just know it isn’t going to live in mine.

  1. It can live in my house! I don’t know how you find time to make so many quilts. I work at a college too and can’t seem to find time to make all the quilts that I want to make.

  2. Very pretty, bright and colourful. I love the blues and yellows in a quilt. If you are looking for a home for it I can send you my address :))

  3. That really is a beautiful quilt, Nicole, and I’m sure you can find a home for it. Would you like my address? lol
I know too well about doing a quilt and knowing it wasn’t going to live with me, but I enjoy the process so much, it’s fun to stretch your comfort zone sometimes.

Thanks for the tips on the square in a square block. What an interesting way to make a block.

  6. I am a subdued palette person as well but I made a French fabric quilt in these very same colors a couple of years ago. I just had to give it a try. I think yours is terrific & I think after it is quilted you will fall in love with it.
