This past weekend, I continued to work on the Designer Mystery 2025 BOM blocks. I am really pleased with how well this one came out. It was precision piecing, for sure, to make sure all those intersecting points came out the way they should. I have never made a block quite like this one and enjoyed the process. Those top and side rectangular units were totally unique for me! The world’s most complicated flying geese units. lol
I really like this block too. The next one up is kind of odd, so I think I will use another block pattern in its place. I have the pattern sets for four or five past Designer Mystery BOMs, and they are all 12″ finished, so it will be easy to swap one or two blocks out.
As I was stitching, I was thinking that I don’t really think the two different sets of blocks in this quilt are cohesive. Take a look at the two sets of blocks:
Don’t they look like they belong in two different quilts?
Sooooo, maybe that is what I will do. I’ll have to make more blocks of course, to end up with at least 12 in each color combo, but I have loads of fabric. It is something to consider.
What do you think? Combine them into one quilt and be done with it, or make more blocks and end up with two quilts, each with its own cohesive color scheme? Another option would be to remake the four grey and aqua blocks in the orange and green fabrics. Maybe use those four in a table runner.

All in one quilt. They will look good together.
It does look like a strange combination, but I bet when all is done, it will be good!
I think that the combination could be interesting, but I like the green and orange block colors together especially well. I think a quilt with only those colors would be beautiful. Use the grey/aqua blocks as a table topper. Your instincts are good. The fabrics are so nice, it will be hard to make a wrong decision.
I think making 2 different quilts would be the way to go. They will both be beautiful!
I saw a finished quilt somewhere— I wish I could remember where, haha, but the way they arranged the different colors was ver striking. Stay the course!
I like both colourways, maybe play with them when they are all finished and then decide as they may look fabulous together. And your points are sooooo good!

That is some precision piecing for sure! So good! I think they can work in one quilt as long as you combine the navy and green or navy and peach colors in the next blocks. Otherwise, I’d go with two separate quilts, which is not a bad idea if you have enough fabric.
I looked around for some finished ones and it looks like they “blend” them with sashing and corner stones. So it could be OK. But if you aren’t sure then make the table topper.
I think you have to ask yourself if you’ll finish & have it quilted. Or will you put the top in a bin & forget about it? It’s definitely a personal preference dilemma! The block that you worked on this weekend looks perfect & it’s nice to have a challenge to keep you on your toes!
You are so right about that Jan. In the long run, which quilt can I actually see on my bed? Or will it languish in the bin unquilted because I don’t in fact, love it….

I think I would “trust the process” and do one quilt. I think it will be a beautiful quilt.
Two quilts, IMHO.
If your make all the blocks without sewing any together, you can lay them out as the pattern says to and see how you like it. If you like the blocks called for the pattern, you’ve already got blocks made for another quilt or two.

those are beautiful blocks! all of them. I’m with Kerry…too soon to know. you’ll have to play with them to really know. they are drastically different color ways.

I’m still here and posted earlier on! My little round posting piccy has me with Smokey the needy cat! His brother is well chilled out. Alpacas have been sheared finally and all is well here including the ducks and the chickens. Thank you for asking.
It has been a very hot and dry summer here and after a little monsoon it is warm and dry again. I think we are in for some snow this winter!

Thank you Nicole. Autumn is a bit early this year. The trees have been losing leaves because of the drought (we don’t have much topsoil here on the hill, so they have to put down deep tap roots into rock that’s a bit like slate) and the berries have raced and gone over already! But the ornamental cherry tree has some lovely red leaves!

That is a “good dilemma” to be in! You have 2 sets of beautiful blocks to use in whatever capacity you choose, either in one quilt, or two, or in a table runner, or bench long pillow! In my book that is already a win. 🙂
