Guess what I did?
I traded in the 740 for a new Bernina 575 Quilter’s Edition!
I stopped by the Dublin Sewing Center on my way home from the Bay Area after my eye injections and just took the plunge. The brothers who own that shop are so nice and very knowledgeable about Berninas. My 740 is in their shop for servicing, and I have been thinking about a new machine, and this one has all the features I want. It is very similar to the other Berninas I have owned, so there isn’t much of a learning curve for me to get used to.
I did have to order a plastic insert to fit the hole I have cut in the oak table I use for sewing. You can just see a bit of the hole it fits in behind the machine in the photo. As soon as it comes I will be all set up and ready to go. I ordered it from Sew Steady.
Some of you long-time readers may remember Handyman Bill, who was so helpful to me when we set up my sewing studio in our previous home. He was fairly horrified when I asked him to cut two openings in the top of a solid oak dining table so I could have a sewing table for my two sewing machines. The idea was that Sara could sit opposite me and we could sew together. That table has served me well for 15 years. Handyman Bill has since passed away but I wish I could tell him, it really was ok to “ruin” that good oak table.
In other news, I got book mail yesterday. What do I do: sew or read?
My eye doctor reports that the swelling behind my right eye has significantly decreased. I am not seeing that much improvement, but he said my eyes will adjust soon and I will have less blurriness.

Oh, Nicole! I hope you love your 570 QE! I’ve had mine since they first came out. I had a 150 Virtuoso that I loved but I wanted the dual feed. My 570 is a workhorse and I just love sewing on it. A couple of years ago I traded in a 640 that I hated. Embroidery not for me. I got a Kaffe 475 and truly love both of my Berninas. (I sent my 150 to my daughter. Too good to trade in). Enjoy your new machine! About 10 years ago I bought a used Janome and I have really developed a dislike for the machine. It is very unhappy free-motion quilting backwards, has trouble even with going over seams, and gets out of alignment too easily. But I can’t replace it yet. Maybe a Bernina next time?
Had my first cataract surgery last week; 2nd next week. So I’ve had “restrictions” all week. But I see better already! Amazing what eye docs can do nowadays!

The motherboard on my 18 year old Janome Horizon 7700 recently went out and the part is no longer available. The main thing I loved about it was the large harp space for free motion quilting.
When shopping for a new machine, I find myself trying to decide between the Bernina 570 QE that you just purchased (it is a beautiful machine) and the Bernina 770 QE PRO (with the large harp space). Any thoughts? Do you think you will miss the larger harp space that your 740 had?
