Guess what I did?
I traded in the 740 for a new Bernina 575 Quilter’s Edition!

I stopped by the Dublin Sewing Center on my way home from the Bay Area after my eye injections and just took the plunge. The brothers who own that shop are so nice and very knowledgeable about Berninas. My 740 is in their shop for servicing, and I have been thinking about a new machine, and this one has all the features I want. It is very similar to the other Berninas I have owned, so there isn’t much of a learning curve for me to get used to.
I did have to order a plastic insert to fit the hole I have cut in the oak table I use for sewing. You can just see a bit of the hole it fits in behind the machine in the photo. As soon as it comes I will be all set up and ready to go. I ordered it from Sew Steady.
Some of you long-time readers may remember Handyman Bill, who was so helpful to me when we set up my sewing studio in our previous home. He was fairly horrified when I asked him to cut two openings in the top of a solid oak dining table so I could have a sewing table for my two sewing machines. The idea was that Sara could sit opposite me and we could sew together. That table has served me well for 15 years. Handyman Bill has since passed away but I wish I could tell him, it really was ok to “ruin” that good oak table.

In other news, I got book mail yesterday. What do I do: sew or read?
My eye doctor reports that the swelling behind my right eye has significantly decreased. I am not seeing that much improvement, but he said my eyes will adjust soon and I will have less blurriness.
Hope your week is going great!

Oh, Nicole! I hope you love your 570 QE! I’ve had mine since they first came out. I had a 150 Virtuoso that I loved but I wanted the dual feed. My 570 is a workhorse and I just love sewing on it. A couple of years ago I traded in a 640 that I hated. Embroidery not for me. I got a Kaffe 475 and truly love both of my Berninas. (I sent my 150 to my daughter. Too good to trade in). Enjoy your new Bernina!
I had a 150 back in the 80s! It was a great machine. I am so glad to hear your endorsement of the 570 QE!
Congratulations 🎉 on your new machine! So happy for you 😁 and to hear thar thr swelling is going dow. – yay! 👏What a good trip!! Books and sewing – what a great way to enjoy your time – both so enjoyable. Have fun and can’t wait to hear more about your new machine!
I sewed this morning and plan to read all afternoon. I will enjoy the best of both worlds.
Enjoy your new machine! About 10 years ago I bought a used Janome and I have really developed a dislike for the machine. It is very unhappy free-motion quilting backwards, has trouble even with going over seams, and gets out of alignment too easily. But I can’t replace it yet. Maybe a Bernina next time?
Had my first cataract surgery last week; 2nd next week. So I’ve had “restrictions” all week. But I see better already! Amazing what eye docs can do nowadays!
I had a Janome that I used to tote back and forth to quilting classes. The only good thing about it was that it was light weight and the bobbin cover was clear. I got rid of it, but don’t remember who I gave it to. Probably my daughter.
Congrats on your new Bernina! I always think some retail therapy is necessary after an appointment. I hope that the table insert comes quickly.
It’s good to know that you are responding to the injections, it’s very hard to be patient.
I thoroughly enjoyed sitting with one of the shop owners and playing with the 570 floor model. He helped me figure out how to make the pressure foot “hover”.
Still waiting for my vision to clear up a bit more, but I am getting along.
It’s great to hear that your eye is showing a decrease in the swelling!
Your recently completed quilt squares look beautiful.
Congratulations on your new Bernina!
The motherboard on my 18 year old Janome Horizon 7700 recently went out and the part is no longer available. The main thing I loved about it was the large harp space for free motion quilting.
When shopping for a new machine, I find myself trying to decide between the Bernina 570 QE that you just purchased (it is a beautiful machine) and the Bernina 770 QE PRO (with the large harp space). Any thoughts? Do you think you will miss the larger harp space that your 740 had?
My backup 440 is giving signs that the motherboard may be wearing out. If I let it sit without using for a year or so, it takes a good 45 minutes to gather its wits and turn on. Once it is on, all is good and I have no more issues. The replacement motherboard is no longer available, so when it truly dies the machine will be kaput.
So glad to hear that you are responding well to these eye injections. Better days ahead!
Congratulations on your new Bernina – what a fun way to treat yourself as a belated Mother’s Day gift. Have fun getting to know each other.
It is a beautiful machine. I can’t wait for the table insert to come so I can get it all set up properly.
I am so happy for you that the treatment for your eyes is working. What a relief!
I am very fortunate that my eyes are responding to the treatment.
What an upbeat post today! A good report from the doctor is really encouraging! Congratulations on the 570QE purchase! Be sure to lower the dual feed behind the presser foot! It’s the reason I bought mine several years ago. You’ll love the jumbo bobbin, too! If the Bernina shop offers a free orientation class for the machine I highly recommend taking it. I’d have to choose sewing over reading at least for today! 🧵
My 740 had the dual feed feature and I loved it. I will definitely be taking advantage of it on the 570 QE too.
I hope you will love your new Bernina!
It is a beautiful machine. No regrets!
So glad to hear about your eye improvement!
Love it that you took the plunge and bought your new Bernina. Life is to short not to have the right machine! Enjoy the weekend!
It was a splurge and probably unnecessary, as the 740 was great. I am totally happy with my decision however and can’t wait to sew on it properly once the table insert arrives.
How very exciting! A new machine! Be sure to let us know how you like it, please. I have a question on the books that you shared…there is a label on the tops of the books that says BOT. What does that mean? I did a google search but wasn’t able to find an appropriate answer. TIA.
Book of the Month Club. They use a different publishing house than the original books, which is slightly lower quality. Not that I can tell any difference. If you join BOM they give you a monthly selection of books (you can buy up to 5). The prices are really good. I pay around $12 per book. I knod of hate that they put their logo on the tops of the books, but oh well.
she’s beautiful! did you take her manual to bed with you? I would. ;p my old girl, 440 qe, is 17 yrs old. she still runs like a champ but I would LOVE a bigger bobbin and MORE space right of the needle. just sayin’…….
lol No, I did not sleep with the 570 manual. You know, every single time I pull out my 440 QE back up machine I am so impressed with how quiet it is, and how great it stitches. If it had a thread cutter, presser foot hover feature, dual feed, and the big bobbin it would be perfect. They did add all those features to the 570 QE, so it suits me great!
Nicole, this is fantastic news all around! First of all, I’m thrilled that your eyes are progressing even if you can’t really tell the difference yet. I’m sure more change will come, if the doctor says it will. How wonderful! I’m also super excited about your new machine. How fun! I’m sure you’ll love it and have an even better time sewing because of it. Finally, I’m so envious that you already have Katherine Center‘s new book in your hands! I got to see her up here in New England on her book tour last year, and she was just wonderful. I love her books and she’s such a kind, fun, cheery person. She stayed at the bookstore until she had talked to every single person in line. And when it was a person‘s turn with her, she acted as if there were no one else in the world and truly had a conversation with each individual. I couldn’t believe it! I pre-ordered the digital/electronic version for my e-reader, but it won’t pop up on my device until the publication date, which I believe is Tuesday. Lucky you to have it in your hands already!
I never miss Katherine Center’s books, and she is so reliable. A new one out every spring! I am not surprised to hear that she is such a kind gracious person. What a thrill to meet her and hear her speak in person.
What great news. And a new Bernina to boot. Please let us know how you like sewing on it. Does it have BSR?
I have been sewing on a Virtuosa 155 for 25 years. I have always loved Berninas and she was my first and only one. I would love to have the stitch regulator though, as I do my own quilting. I have noticed that a couple of things no longer work on my machine, so I may need to consider getting a new one too.
It has something they call dual feed, which is a built in walking foot. THink it is the same as BSR.
My first Bernina was in the 150 series, it was a great machine. I have had the 440QE, which is great, and the 740 which had loads of whistles and bells. Huge bobbin, presser foot hover, thread cutter, needle threader, and loads of other features I love. I do not do embroidery, so I didn’t need loads of stitches beyond zig zag, button hole, and blanket stitch, which the 570 has. I is missing the super wide area on the right of the needle which is great for quilting large projects. I only quilt very small projects, so I didn’t mind giving that feature up.
