Sorry for the lack of a post yesterday. Dennis and I have had so many errands this week, and we have ventured out together to take care of a lot of boring things. Today may be more of the same, but I hope to get some sewing in.
The last Riley Blake Challenge block is ready for me to make, and the fifth week of the 4th of July at Granny’s blocks are out and need to be finished so I don’t fall behind. I will get it done, but it may happen at the end of the week and on the weekend.
The block at the top of this post is one I made for Sewcialites 3. I have veered sharply off the path with that sew-along and have skipped a lot of their blocks because they were too representational (a heart, a flower, etc.) or too simple in design. I have been digging into my printouts of blocks from previous sew-alongs that used 9-inch finished blocks. My plan is to use them in place of a lot of the Sewcialites blocks.
You can decide, along with me, whether they fit the feel of my Sewcialites quilt. I am still going to call it that because that is how it started out. From the beginning, though, I have been changing things up, starting with that larger center medallion.

A couple of years ago I paid to join a sew-along called Etoiles Rouges. The project featured dozens of variations on a few blocks, all using French General fabrics. All blocks finish at 9″. The top block is one that I made using the FG fabrics from my stash. The second one is as well. I think I like both of those blocks.

Next up is this block, for which I am not feeling the love. It is just so… asymmetrical. Plus, the assembly process was totally bonkers. Some of the measurements were in 1/16th of an inch. I kid you not. Through some miracle, the block actually came out at 9 1/2″ unfinished. Check out the assembly photo below:

Lots of bias edges. Like I said, it is a miracle that it is the right size. And I don’t even really like it.
So you can see I have just been playing around, which is fine. I will decide which of these blocks will live to make it into the quilt top! That’s all I have for today. I hope to get back on track with my sew-alongs soon!

Oh, it is going to be another beautiful quilt. I am sure that you will figure out a way to set the blocks that will be stunning.
Do you have a bin labeled Orphan blocks? I bet it is quite large. Would make an interesting quilt …
Have a good day.
I like the asymmetrical block! It came out the correct size & I’d use it! But, it’s your quilt, so you get to choose! Happy sewing!
I agree with you on the asymmetrical block. It bothers me. Maybe different colors would help? But a 1/16″ seam is ridiculous!
