I made another flower block with the Old Glory leftovers and I think they will make a pretty, summery quilt. I enjoy making quilts that all have the same block, but with different fabrics in each one. The variety in choosing three different prints for each block is fun.
There are a few things I neglected to mention about this block. One, the pattern is by Fig Tree and is called Sunflower. You can download the pattern (for a fee) on the Fig Tree website. Second, this block comes out much better if you press all the seams open, including all the sew and flip corner pieces. Your block will be flatter, and your points will match up better. Third, this block does have something called a “set-in seam”. I know many quilters avoid them, but honestly, it is not difficult.

Next, the A Quilting Life block for March was released on Monday, so I thought I’d better make it and stay caught up with the BOM. The new block is the upper right one. I am not happy with the color placement in it, though, and think I will remake it. I am using leftovers for this project as well, and actually had the flying geese already made (leftover from the previous project). They were there, and were a time-saver, so I couldn’t resist using them. However, I don’t think they stand out very well, so I am re-thinking the color placement. I have a lot of the navy left and may experiment with incorporating more of that into these blocks.

I don’t think I shared my March dining room table with you. I made this pineapple table runner a few years ago and really enjoy bringing it out every March. I used one of the Creative Grids Pineapple rulers, the 6 1/2″ size.

The blocks really did come out accurately. I had much better results with this trim ruler than I did with a previous Pineapple quilt I made some years ago.

This is my Red Pineapple quilt, finished back in 2021. The ruler I used was tricky to position, and my points didn’t always match up the way I would have liked them to. I recommend the Creative Grids Pineapple ruler over whatever other one I used here. I don’t recall what it was, and believe I may have discarded it.
Have you ever made a Pineapple Quilt? They are labor-intensive and use a ton of fabric. My friend Thelma (Cupcakes ‘n’ Daisies) made one with foundation papers, which turned out spectacularly. I had good results with the Creative Grids ruler when I made my second Pineapple quilt and would use it again.
I am off to the Bay Area for my own medical appointments (eye injection), so no post from me tomorrow. I hope you have a fantastic weekend. Spring is in the air here, and I am tempted to pull out my warmer-weather clothes!

Love the star blocks. The block you aren’t so happy about might look great once all the other blocks are together and if you still aren’t so fussed with it, it would make a nice little medallion for a charity quilt, surrounded by something simple like squares.
Oh that green pineapple quilt is awesome. I might have to make one too. Thanks for another great idea!
The Pineapple quilt can be overwhelming in a large size, but with a good trim ruler and a smaller project, it is totally doable.
I have a drawer full of “orphan” blocks. This one will probably join the others there. Someday perhaps I will do something with them all.
Oh, those Old Glory blocks are so pretty! I am saving Sherri’s BOM for another time. I plan to make last year’s at some point as I loved the Log Cabin setting. I started a small pineapple project a few years ago when I hadn’t been quilting for very long. It seemed too complicated so it’s in time out. I don’t think it was the Creative Grids ruler.
Sherri’s projects are all so doable. I always save all the patterns when she releases them. They are free for a year, then if you want them, you must pay a fee on her Etsy shop. Her log cabin surround blocks from last year were my inspiration for Eva’s graduation quilt.
I did some pineapple blocks with thr Creative Grids ruler – made it so easy! Now I just need to finish the project 🤣 hope all goes well with your appt and you have a good weekend 😊
Thanks Kelli. I will be staying with a family friend, which is always fun for me. I am going to try to convince her to let me order dinner in .
I bought a pineapple ruler once and then had a moment of clarity when I looked at all the jagged points. I promptly donated to a thrift shop. I’m looking at a very tempting block of the month program by Shabby Fabrics. It’s beautiful fabric but the cost is prohibitive. Add some fun exploring activity to your medical appointments.
I actually signed up for that Shabby Fabrics BOM, but cancelled when reality hit. That was SUPER expensive!
LOVE that red pineapple quilt! I remember Thelma’s paper pieced one……I thought I’d try it one day but never have.
I think she made her own foundation papers too!
I bought a pineapple ruler many years ago, sold by a well-known duo at the time. When I laid it on my cutting mat, I could not get the ruler markings to line up with the mat at both ends. I checked it against several other rulers, and it was fully a quarter inch shorter than all the others. I was flabbergasted! Threw it in the trash.
I did a little research, and I think the ruler I used, which was a total fail, was called the Pineapple Rule by Heirloom Creations. They seem to be out of business now. I just could not get good results with that ruler. The Creative Grids Pineapple Ruler is a completely different story: it works great!
Those 2 pineapple quilts are lovely, but the intricacy intimidates me. If I’m ever “up for a challenge” I may try to do a small project with pineapple blocks.
Good luck with your injection appointments. May they go as smoothly as your past ones have been!
If you ever do decide to give that block a try, be sure to do a small project and see how it goes. The blocks are time consuming and the amount of wasted fabric is huge. It would be a good scrap busting project for a table topper or candle mat.
I’ve heard that pineapple blocks result in a lot of wasted fabric. I like them, but if I were to attempt something it would probably be a table topper or runner. Enjoy time & dinner with your friend!
