Two Quilts Back From the Quilter and Charred Corn Salad

I made the most delicious Charred Corn Salad this week. If you want a summery meal that won't heat up the kitchen and will be ready when you want it, give this recipe a try. You do have to grill four ears of corn in advance, and fry up a few pieces of bacon, but the rest is just cutting up some veggies and making a salad dressing.

Do give this a try, it was SO good!

Now for some quilts that I just got back from the quilter.

Here is a little peek at the quilt I made for my sister Andrea. The quilter suggested the Baptist Fans design and I went with it. I think it works on this little quilt, which will be a table runner. The block pattern was from Lori Holt's Great Granny Squared book.

This is a close-up of the quilting on Lucy, my Halloween quilt from a number of years past. She sure had a long wait to be quilted, poor girl. A spider web design was used, and it really doesn't show up that well. This quilt would have been a good candidate for custom quilting in those white snowball squares. However, I am not about to spring for custom quilting on a Halloween quilt. Or pretty much any quilt anymore.

It's fine, really. For a quilt I will have out just for a few weeks each year, I am totally happy. This is an old Miss Rosie pattern that you can get as a download from Fat Quarter Shop. It was fun to make and used a ton of scraps. It would look great in any fabrics at all: Christmas, overall scrappy, blues & browns, etc. Don't you love my little photo-bomber?

I hope you all have a great weekend. On Sunday, my husband and I leave for four days in the Bay Area. He has been getting infusions every four (now six) weeks for his Guillain-Barré Syndrome. They are quite effective, but they are given over three consecutive days, so we have to stay down there in a hotel. Ugh. It's expensive too, when you add in meals and Archie's boarding. He gets to go to his favorite place on Earth: dog sitting on the property of an opera singer and her jazz musician husband. I am sure there is singing, but there are also always other dogs there for him to romp with, which he adores. When I drop him off, he whimpers with joy when we turn into her driveway, and then doesn't even look back at me when they take him.

  1. Nicole, the recipe looks delicious. If it is half as good as the shrimp orzo, it will be a keeper. The hardest part was finding orzo in my area. I had never used it before and neither grocery store had it. I substituted
A box of rice pilaf and it was good too. I mentioned not finding the orzo and a friend googled it. Walmart has it. Go figure. It was delicious and will be making it Thursday. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Salad recipe looks great. As do the quilts, especially with Archie doing his Vanna routine! Our two wirehairs Ole and Bentley both loved going to “summer camp.” The boarding place was out in the country and owned by our vet at the time. They knew the long driveway well. Their favorite was being allowed to bite at their fan sprinkler until they wore themselves out. Fond memories.

  3. Both quilts are lovely – in fact, you have “enabled” me to get the Lucy pattern (do these social media terms bother you as much as they do me?!). Summer here in Florida is so hot and humid that I am getting more sewing done than usual. I also just got a new Arrow sewing chair and it really does make a difference! My back does not ache after sewing. The corn salad looks yummy!

  4. I like everything about this post! The salad looks delicious and the runner with the Baptist fan quilting is perfect. Lucy will be a great addition to Halloween decor, the quilting is just right, and Archie looks perfectly posed on it. 😊 It’s so good that Archie likes the dog sitter, it makes it easier to leave him. I hope the infusions go smoothly, at least every 6 weeks is an improvement. That care! 🇺🇸

  5. Your sister is going to love her runner! It’s so soft & plush looking! The corn salad looks delicious & so summery! Archie has claimed the Halloween quilt for his own, I see! He blends right into it! Four days are a lot of time in a hotel, but do you take a small cooler with snacks & wine from home? (if Dennis can have it during infusions) You’ll get some major reading time in, at any rate! Knowing he’s in a fun environment has to make leaving Archie a bit easier for you & him! 🐶

  6. I do custom quilting on all my applique quilts. I figure they really deserve it but it’s expensive. I have 3 applique quilts that need quilting. yikes!
try to stay cool…it’s gonna be warm here today and tomorrow. low 80s. not terrible. just warm.
I think Andrea will love her runner. it is so elegant. I really would love an entire quilt in that pattern in those shades. just elegant.

  7. Thank you for the corn salad recipe – I’m definitely going to give that a try! I love the idea of shredded chicken with it. I also love the Lucy quilt! I have a large stack of Halloween fabrics that I’d collected to make a pattern I’d seen that was a huge pumpkins made of squares and then could never find the pattern again. This was years ago and the fabrics have been sitting ever since. Lucy will fill the bill! Archie is just like my two when they go to board at our friend’s home. She has lots of pups, hers and fosters, and they love my friend so much – kind of makes me feel like “hey, what I am, chopped liver??” LOL But we feel really good when we’re away and know they are having lots of fun and probably don’t want to come home when we pick them up. Ha!

  8. Will have to try that salad and love your little photobomber 🤣 too funny that he doesn’t even look back at you 🤣. Your quilts look great! I think the part that shows the web looks good.
