Well, It’s Been Quite a Week

Here is my husband trying to muster a brave smile through his pain. He is sitting in the new gazillion dollar chair I bought so he could recline into a position where his discs weren't screaming out in agony. You see Archie there in the background in his kennel? He thinks the power recliner is evil. Chairs do not move. Every time Dennis adjusts the chair Archie flips out into a torrent of growling and barking trying to save him from the evil chair.

Meanwhile, to add to the peaceful atmosphere, we have had roofers pounding and banging overhead. And because the roofers didn't finish on schedule, we have also had painters pounding and banging on the sides of the house in preparation for the house painting. It's been a lot.

To make matters worse, we had to go overnight to the Bay Area so Dennis could have medical tests in advance of his surgery next week. On the way home (a three hour drive) he became lightheaded and started seeing double. He also had no urine output for six hours. I drove him right to the Emergency room in a town near us, where it was found he was suffering from severe dehydration. After an ultrasound to make sure his bladder and kidneys were still functioning, plus two huge pitchers full of water, he began to recover. Can't wait to see the bill for that.

Surgery is on Wednesday of this week, and it cannot come soon enough.

Needless to say, there has been no sewing going on (or cooking or cleaning or basically anything else except nursing).

In a spare moment, I managed to spend a bundle on Christmas fabrics to make the Christmas at Granny's quilt. The majority of these fabrics are from the recent Lori Holt "Home Town Christmas" collection. I was able to buy fat quarters on Etsy. Farm Road Quilts had a nice selection. It is also so convenient to be able to just buy a fat quarter and not an entire half-yard.

After the surgery, when things (hopefully) settle down, maybe I can get a start on this fun project. Meanwhile, communication may sparse on the blog, but I will try to keep you posted on what's happening.

  1. I sure hope the surgery is successful and your husband is completely relieved of his pain. What a difficult time you are experiencing now. I hope all these challenges are gone soon.

  2. Hope that surgery goes as scheduled and is successful. You are going through a very rough patch, but things will improve and you will get through it. In the meantime, wishing you fortitude—and fabric fondling and sewing dreams to sustain you. All the best.

  3. Prayers for both of you that surgery is successful. This is a difficult time while you navigate through it, but hopefully it will get much better after the surgery.

  4. Sending prayers for a successful surgery, strength and patience for you both. It’s definitely been a lot for you. Try to rest when you can. Sewing and chores will be there when everything settles.❤️

  5. So glad to hear from you. I was a bit worried. Does not sound fun, glad water solved it. Amazing how important water is.
As your household whirled, mine finally settled down. I was actually able to work.
My youngest needed a hammock for her kittens, I was delighted to use up pillow ticking and webbing I had in hand. The kittens loved it!
I hemmed the last of my baby flannel so every swaddling blanket in the new baby gift bin is done and ready. (I have made 100’s of square blankets over the years.)
And I started on a half square triangle quilt for my niece that my husband helped me iron/cut last winter. I paired blue squares with white/blue print squares and started drawing lines across the back of the white/blue print fabrics. Very satisfying.
I also took 8 yards of 60” sweatshirt fabric, a roll of cotton batting and a 8 yard bolt of wide cotton flannel to my long arm quilter. She is quilting the whole thing. I will cut into four 2 yard sections. I will then bind three sides of each on machine. The bare end on each will have the corners turned in and sewn shut. These make lovely quilts for watching TV with an end tucked to keep feet warm.

  6. I’m keeping you both in my heart & thoughts. Don’t try to blog until you have some down time. We’ll be here when everything settles down. Big hugs coming your way. 💕💕

  7. I will be keeping you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers this week. And poor Archie! Lots going on for a poor little Foxie! Our Foxie never growled during Milton but I was watching a movie the next week and there was a storm in the movie. Cosmo started shaking! Hang in there. Better things ahead.

  8. I will be thinking of you and your husband this Wednesday and will pray your husband’s surgery is a success so that you can put this and all the pounding and banging behind you. You picked out beautiful Christmas fabric!

  9. Still praying for your husband, you, and for the doctors who will perform the surgery. You will definitely need some serious sewing time when this is over! Hugs to you! ❤️

  10. I’m sorry to read that it has been rough going. I hope surgery goes smoothly and helps with your husband’s pain.

  11. Thinking of all of you. The stress is just so hard. Dehydration will get you every time. At our age you have to be so careful. I learned that lesson this summer.
Hope to hear good news from you soon. I’m stressed for you.

  12. That is a lot, Nicole and it will be good to have all of these under your belt by next week hopefully! Fabric retail therapy always helps lol! Take care and one step at a time!

  13. Hopefully by Thursday, your hubby will have “turned the corner” and will be recuperating. I will be keeping you in my prayers this week for a full recovery!

  14. Yikes! Are you taking care of yourself? What a terrible ordeal. Please watch a funny video tonight. Do you remember that man who recovered from an incurable illness by watching funny movies in his hospital room nonstop? He went on to write about this, thus earning money to pay to repay his bills. But, he also taught his doctors a few things. You deserve to treat yourself to every bit of fabric you want after all you have been through! Keeping both of you in our prayers. Here’s hoping Archie makes peace with the evil chair!

  15. Thinking of you both! Wow, what a week and it’s only Monday. Prayers will be going out for Wednesday and hope this can be behind you as quickly as it came on! Love the fabric– I would much prefer to pick and choose fat quarters than buy Lori’s sets which are getting too pricey for me! You did an amazing job. xox from Maine.

  16. Prayers for your hubby and you that surgery goes very well with no pain afterwards! I love your blog and really can’t believe how much you get done!

  17. We didn’t know how much of our retirement would be traveling to appointments. I will pray God will direct the surgery and bring healing.

  18. So very sorry to hear this news Nicole. I hope your hubby ‘s surgery is successful and his pain alleviated. I had two herniated discs 15 years ago and it is terribly painful. Don’t worry about us. Look after yourself and your hubby and family. We will wait patiently for news! I hope you have some time to fabric fondle and dream of future projects. Sending hugs and prayers to you!💕

  19. I’m glad you are home until the surgery. I will be keeping you both close in my heart. May the surgery go well and you both recover from all this soon after. Gentle hugs to you both.

  20. Sorry for his pain. I have had 3 spine surgeries for sciatica. Hope he feels better real soon and follows his therapy schedule. May I ask the chair brand? I need one too that’s super comfortable.
