Christmas at Granny’s QAL

I've been a bit distracted lately, so I missed the start-up information on this fun holiday sew-along that Heather Briggs of My Sew Quilty Life is doing. You can read all about it on Heather's blog. The basic block is a traditional Granny block, with an adorable center-pieced unit that has a Christmas theme. As you can see, the first block features a Christmas Tree, and each week there is a new center: a present, a hat, a stocking, etc.

The Quilt Along began in August, so as I said, I am very late to this party. You can still join in though, never fear. Heather is selling the entire pattern on her website. Link here. I paid and joined up yesterday. The patterns are supposed to be released to participants by email each Monday. I do not know if I will get 8 blocks all at once, or if they will be doled out to me one week at a time. Guess I'll find out this morning. I am anxious to get started, so I hope all the weeks I have missed will come at once! Check out Heather's Instagram feed for pictures of what blocks have been released so far. They are seriously cute.

Oh, and guess what? Each week you get a cookie recipe too.

There is an Instagram group #christmasatgrannysqal, where people are posing photos of their blocks that you must check out. Folks are using their stash or various Christmas fabric collections, so it is super fun to take a look and get inspired.

This will be a lovely project to work on during the holiday season, and with only 9 blocks, the project should not be overwhelming. The finished size of the quilt is around 62" square, and is fat quarter friendly. You do need some extra yardage for the sashing and borders etc. It is the perfect size for over the sofa or to drape over your balcony railing as I like to do.

Let me know in the comments if you are doing this quilt along, or if you think it could be a fun project!

Husband health update: wish I had better news. He is still in a lot of pain, and his surgery date has been pushed out to Oct. 23. I went out and bought him a gazillion-dollar power recliner which he claims is saving his life. He can recline it and take some pressure off the discs that are causing him so much agony. He is barely able to walk even with the walker. It's been a situation over here, I tell you. We will get through it. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all your kind words, wishes, and prayers.

  1. So so sorry about your husband! 😥 Thankful you found a chair that helps with his pain a bit – what a bummer that the surgery was pushed out until the 23rd. Praying for strength to endure until that day. Pain can be so overwhelming. Love the Christmas at Granny’s! Such a cute quilt and i love the idea of using up scraps! Who doesn’t have those? 🤣

  2. I haven’t seen the Christmas at Granny’s, I had to go check it out and it’s adorable!
So sorry that your husband is having to wait for surgery. The chair is at least helping him be a little more comfortable. It’s so hard when there isn’t a lot you can do to help relieve the pain. Take care and healing prayers sent your way. ♥️

  3. I had forgotten about the Christmas at Granny’s sew along too. It looks very cute but I’ve got so many projects in the works already I’m afraid to take on another one!
Let’s hope your husband’s surgery is not postponed anymore. At least his new chair is providing some level of comfort for him.

  4. Hello Nicole, I am just catching up on your blog and wanted to say how sorry I am for you and your husband’s recent health problems. Glad to hear that the treatment for your macular degeneration is getting great results. Sure hope your husband’s surgery goes ahead soon as scheduled, that it goes well, and that after recovery it brings much relief. Wishing you all the best. And thanking you, as always, for your regular blogging and your terrific and thoughtful content—and of course for all the great quiltiness!

  5. Any relief for your husband’s back pain is well worth every single dollar. It’s frustrating when medical appointments are rescheduled for even a day or two since there’s already been a good amount of time to wait. That’s a really cute quilt but, as another reader said, I have so many projects in the works I really don’t want to add another one right now!

  6. poor Dennis. my heart breaks for him. and for you. it is so difficult to watch someone suffer. sending lots of hugs.

  7. I totally understand your husbands pain. I’ve had two surgeries and have a fusion from L2-S1. I’ve found so much relief from a stimulator that I’ve had since July 31. If the surgery doesn’t help look into this It’s not a cure all but I can walk now where before I couldn’t

  8. So sorry to read about your husband. Back pain is one of the worst things to deal with. I hope relief will come soon!

  9. Aren’t you glad that those do-all chairs were invented? I’m happy that it helps your hubby. Christmas at Granny’s is adorable! My husband really likes the traditional reds and greens and so he’s not fond of the last queen size quilt I made with the sage green and darker reds. Thus, I have purchased the correct colors and am now checking patterns for next year with him! Sigh. This is a possibility so I’ll bookmark this one.

  10. Sorry to hear that Dennis’s surgery got pushed back. I’m glad the recliner is helping to give him some measure of comfort while you wait. I really love that Christmas BOM. Almost joined but I feel like I have too many going right now – I will very much look forward to seeing your blocks! I got my Vintage Modern BOM off to the longarm quilter yesterday – yay!

  11. I am sorry to hear this news…your husband is really taking a licking by this back pain. I am keeping him, and you in my thoughts…pain is exhausting—the chair is a fabulous gift to him—glad it helps.
I am going to check out the QAL…not that I have time for anything else, but it sure does look cute.
Peace to you both, and better days ahead.

  12. Oh my goodness! Returned from vacation and find out about your husband’s back pain. I’m so sorry he has to go through that. Hoping that the surgery will work wonders and he will get full relief. In the meantime his fancy power recliner will be a lifesaver. Praying that the recuperation period will be easy and complete.
