Around the House

Spring has sprung and we have been enjoying our new fire table on the back porch. My husband is particularly fond of sitting around it reading his book or watching the hummingbird feeder.

It has little round clear glass stones that are really pretty in the dark when the fire comes up through them.

I have some great news about Dennis' health progress as he recovers from Guillain Barre Syndrome. Over the weekend he was able to walk 8 or 10 steps without using his walker! He did it in the kitchen between two counters he could grab onto if he lost his balance, but he never needed to reach out for support. It was an emotional moment for us to see that he could walk unaided, no matter how briefly.

I've also been doing a bit of gardening. Not much, as we have a gardener who does most of the things we need. I wanted a planter with red, white, and blue flowers so I put one together in an empty pot.

The flowers are called Calibrachoa or "Million Bells". They are annuals in many places, but here in California, I can get them to bloom again over a couple of years. They are super colorful, have loads of flower, and bloom all throughout the spring, summer, and into autumn. They are great for hanging baskets because they trail over the sides of the pots. They also like the sun and don't mind if you let them dry out a bit by accident. In other words, they are forgiving of some neglect!

I planted these last year and here they are again this season blooming away like mad.

Hope your week got off to a great start!

  1. What wonderful news! I’m thrilled for Dennis.❤️ Enjoy the fire pit. We’d already be eaten alive by the mosquitos.🦟😑

  2. Wonderful news. I’m thrilled for both of you. We have a normal old fashioned fire bowl that uses wood. We don’t use it much because NE weather – too hot in the summer. Too busy to wait up for it to burn out? I am jealous of your flowers. The rule around here is after Mother’s Day for plantings. ENJOY!!!

  3. I am so happy for Dennis and you – that’s great progress! Enjoy your pretty flowers and that cool fire table!

  4. May I ask what precipitated the syndrome in your husband? I was not aware of this crisis. I have heard of it as a result of some vaccinations. It seems we sign a paper when we get a flu shot that mentions it. I hope I’m not being insensitive in inquiring about this. I have only lately gotten your blog regularly.

  5. It starts with ‘baby steps’, right? 👣 It sounds as if Dennis is making progress & that’s something to celebrate…perhaps by enjoying a lovely fire table! Your flowers look so ‘Spring-y’! 🌷 That can’t happen here yet because we’re forecast for 4-6″ of s.n.o.w. tomorrow night & Thursday.

  6. Oh that is great news that Dennis can take a few steps un-aided… hopefully this is the beginning of adding more and more steps!
Your fire table looks wonderful and it’s so nice you can enjoy the evenings outside relaxing.

  7. Exciting news about Dennis walking unaided, wonderful progress. I’d be sitting by that fire table all the time, it’s lovely. Million Bells are great forgiving plant, so pretty. Thanks for sharing! 🌸

  8. Fantastic news and progress for Dennis! Keep it going, Dennis! For some reason, my iPad won’t let me access your blog. It has a security notice saying visiting your site may lead to info being stolen by hackers and no matter what I do, I am not able to access your blog on any of the search engines. So if you have any tips or fixes for me, pass them on please. Thanks you, Nicole.
