New Sewing Chair

I got a new sewing chair. I kind of had to. My old chair was great, but it had wheels.

After getting the new carpeting, I wanted a mat of some kind under my sewing chair, to preserve the carpeting. I ordered a slick transparent plastic mat and thought I was good to go.

And "go" I did. Every time I lifted my foot to the foot pedal of the sewing machine, my chair would shoot backward about four feet. When I stood up to go to the ironing table, my chair would careen off in the opposite direction. It was completely out of control. I could not figure out how to get the darn wheels off, so I listed my chair for sale on our neighborhood marketplace and ordered a new one.

My handy son-in-law came over and put the new chair together for me and carried it upstairs to its new place. I think it will work out so much better.

Here is a picture of my old chair:

It was fine. It served me well for maybe ten or more years. I didn't need armrests for sure. They always kind of got in the way. And the wheels were awful on that slick mat. You can see how the chair was wanting to roll right off of it.

My new chair will stay put!

Keep in mind I have not even sat in it yet, so I can't tell you how well it is actually working, but here is the link to the new chair on Amazon.

Can you believe April is almost over? I can't. What on earth do I have to show for this month?  lol

Sara and I did a very fun podcast this Sunday, and I hope you will check it out. We talked about three books we each read this month, and also took a deep dive into the topic of book clubs. Your comments on your experiences with book clubs gave me a lot to contribute, so thank you! Check us out on wherever you listen to podcasts, "Reeding Between the Lines" (link on the right sidebar) or see us in person on YouTube.

  1. Having an out-of-control chair could have been disastrous. A fall isn’t anything you want to invite! April has been a busy month & I agree that it’s flown by! I’m looking forward to tuning into your podcast today as I wait for my husband at his two appointments ‘in the big city’ today.

  2. Yes,yes, yes. Please, where did you purchase your chair?
I have one that is similar and I love that it has no arms.
Thanks for posting about the Cali&Co mystery project. I might give that one a try.

  3. It sounds like your old chair was possessed! 😁 Certainly would not have been good if that chair rolled off when you were in the process of sitting down. 😳 I’ve never seen a task chair without wheels, good idea!

  4. I used to have a chair that had arms and I found it seemed to be a hindrance. I got an old chair from work with no arms and found it worked so much better for me. I’ll be interested in your comparison when you’ve used it for a while.

  5. lol at the unplanned rolling. I’ve experienced it. I wish my chair didn’t have arms. it was a ‘throw away’ along with my sewing and cutting table. my husband snagged them for me 10 yrs ago. some company was just tossing old furniture.
enjoy the sunshine! I actually sewed something on Sunday! yay!

  6. I am sure I am unusual. I sew in an antique armless straight back wooden chair that was part of my great grandmother’s (1894-1976) dining room set. The firmness and stability are perfect. It stays put, I slip in and out of it (to the side) easily. It has a padded seat, it is comfortable. I think it might be taller than an average sewing chair, which is easier for me.
I attended a multi day quilt retreat in March. Interestingly, a number of people brought their own chairs or brought height adjusters for the facility chairs.

  7. I love the chair without rollers! I’ve never seen one for sewing like that. A few years ago I ordered a new mat for my sewing area that is glass, it is the best thing ever!! Yes, it was a little more expensive but it’s like butter! I think it’s guaranteed never to crack or break!

  8. I couldn’t find the bookshop that you mentioned in your podcast episode, Thomasville Books, but maybe I have the name wrong. Do you have a link or address that you could share? I liked the sound of the book club (or recommended reading list?) that you mentioned in your podcast episode.
