Bow Ties

Ok, this was a pretty straightforward block. Four little Bow Ties for the Strawberry Garden quilt. I'd forgotten what a quick and easy block this is. I once made a Bow Tie quilt out of Civil War reproduction scraps and enjoyed the experience. It was also a good feeling to use up so many of my scraps.

This was from 2015. When I look back, I am amazed at how many quilts I was churning out then!

Would you believe these blocks are only 3 inches?

The first time the Bow Tie block came to my attention was probably back in the 90s, when a woman I attended a sewing group with was working on one. She had purchased a stack of hand-sewn 1940s Bow Tie blocks made from feed sacks from an antique shop. She was carefully piecing them together to make a quilt. I thought it was charming at the time and promised myself that someday I would make a quilt with that block as well.

This look back makes me think I should make a one-block quilt again. How about using up my Fig Tree scraps or Minick and Simpson scraps? Food for thought….

  1. I remember that bowtie quilt! And, weren’t we all ‘churning out’ so many quilts then?! 😊 Along with many of us still working at least part-time! There’s a lot to say for a one-block quilt! Have a great week!

  2. I think a one block sew along would be fun! I did a nine-patch, 3 inch finished, block exchange in an online Jo Morton group years ago. I put them into double nine patch blocks a last year and just need to put them together into a quilt top!

  3. omg! I have really grown to LOVE reproduction fabric. Every time I see a quilt I want to make it.
have fun in monterey! weather should be cool and wonderful!

  4. I love your bowtie quilt! Such beautiful colors! I always thought I would make one, hasn’t happened yet. Maybe someday!

  5. Fabulous! I love reproductions.
I made a bowtie quilt out of homespun in the 1990’s. Not sure where it is right now, one of my kids might have it.

  6. I will be making a scrap quilt in July. It is a pattern called “Confidence’ by Laundry Basket Quilts/Edyta Sitar. She is having an online class on Sat. July 19 and when you sign up, you get the pattern. It looks very easy, I don’t really need the class except that it will guarantee me some sewing time.

  7. I’m working on 2 repro quilts right now and the scraps are accumulating fast! Bowtie would be a good one for these. I love yours!

  8. A bowtie quilt in Fig Tree fabric would be great. I think Fig Tree had a bowtie quilt along last year. I think the finished block size was bigger than yours.

  9. Wow! What a gorgeous quilt and only 3” blocks! You must’ve been making bow ties for days! I think one in fig tree scraps would look amazing!
