I got busy this weekend and sorted out the backings for a couple of quilts that I have been meaning to send off to my quilters. The Red Pineapple quilt has been done for ages, but because of all the bias edges, I wanted to add a narrow outside border to keep things from stretching too much. I tell you, I take my time getting around to things. I think I started this quilt back in 2013. Well, it’s done now.
I had a fairly extensive stash of French General fabrics (still do), and used them in this quilt. A Pineapple quilt takes a TON of fabric. I used a trim tool by Possibilites that frustrated the heck out of me, but I managed to finish the quilt. I should have paper pieced it or used the Creative Grids ruler.

Remember this fun quilt? It is Summer in the Country, a sew-along I did a few years ago. The sew-along was originally on Moda’s website, and featured fabric called Back Porch by Me & My Sister Designs. The blocks were free and super fun to do, and the quilt turned out to be adorable. The block patterns are still on Moda’s website. Time to get it quilted and on my front porch this summer!

I had a couple of runners I had made that I tossed in for quilting as well. The one above is a pattern called Buffalo Check Runner by Carried Away. They have a Halloween version that I have made as well. I took liberties with the pattern and changed it up. I made my runner shorter and added a containment border around the edges.

I wasn’t sure if I’d even send this one out for quilting. It was kind of an experiment, and I can’t tell you anything about the blocks I used for it. I do not think it was a pattern, I was just fooling around. It is kind of primitive looking, but what the heck. I will either use it or gift it to someone. At least it is out of my To Be Quilted Bin.
Hope you all had a lovely weekend. Dennis is off getting his monthly infusions, so I am on my own. I can either take advantage of not having to cook by having salad for dinner every night or eating Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream. The jury is still out on that decision.

I’ve wanted to make a pineapple quilt for years, and I’ve eyeballed your red one on your old blog format since you posted it. Last week I ordered the papers to make a pineapple. It was a toss-up between the papers or Creative Grids. I figured I’d make only one quilt, so I decided not to invest in the ruler. Now the decision is to make it either from Civil War fabrics or reds. I’m leaning toward red now that I’ve seen yours again. Stay tuned!
Good luck! It is a commitment for sure.
oh, civil war fabric would be soooo gorgeous!
Oh Nicole! That pineapple quilt just sings! What a treasure. Love the outer border in the French General fabric. Your time and fabric investment were certainly well spent.
I had such a huge stash of French General when I made it. And I had a couple of yards of the border fabric still on hand, so it pays to have a good stash! I thought with all those bias edges, I had better stabilize things.
Summer in the Country is so cute!! I think I will go print the block patterns. I have lots of red, white and blue fabric I can use. Use it up, right?? I do like your fabric with that royal blue color!
That was a fun sew-along. I was determined to make it with the featured fabric, and I remember having to scrounge around the internet to pull together the pieces!
part of the fun…..hunting and gathering. (that’s what my husband says)
What a super pineapple quilt!
Thanks Kerry. It was very time consuming. And the amount of fabric it took was incredible.
Me too! Love it! Headed to buy paper piecing patterns.
Nicole – what size are your blocks?
I am normally not a “red” person, but it is so fabulous.
The blocks are 12″. Be prepared to need a ton of fabric!
The 12” paper piecing had too wide of logs. I ordered 6” finished paper piecing patterns thru my local shop. I am doing a larger wall hanging.
I am going to dig out all the reds I have, see what type of red I have the most of, and then go hunt for more of that tone.
I think I am going to use small white prints for my light. That will modernize it.
This is going to be my travel project because there is no deadline and I am not worrying about running out of fabric. I can always get more.
My pickle dish is moving to my focus project, 3 pickle wedges per day and I should be done in 53+ days. I have 40. I need 200. I need to get this done in case I do not have enough fabric and need to buy more, it is 3 specific fabrics.
Have always loved your red pineapple quilt and so glad it ‘s getting the ‘quilting’ it deserves!
How big were the squares? I’m thinking of ordering papers. Thanks Nicole!
The blocks are 12″. I have seen this quilt made all scrappy and it was fabulous too.
Wow! The pineapple quilt is just stunning! Your color choice is perfect. Have a good week on your own–Cherry Garcia pairs nicely with brownies…just saying…
Headed to Walmart for ice cream and brownie mix…
lol
I started a pineapple quilt, using a 5 in block. It quickly became a table runner, but I like it.
Your quilt is just beautiful.
I opt for the ice cream..
I have made a couple of small pineapple runners as well. That is the right size! My gosh the time and fabric that went into making that big one was incredible.
Your Red Pineapple quilt is gorgeous! It reminds me that I have a pineapple quilt taking up space in a bin. I was using the Possibilities pineapple ruler as well, probably why I stopped working on it…🤔 The RW&B quilt will be beautiful on your porch for summer. Getting quilts back from the quilter is always an exciting day! Ice cream for dinner sounds perfect to me! 😊
That Possibiilties ruler isn’t even made anymore. I remember struggling to have my blocks all come out the same size. So many seams. My quilters have both said they are on board to receive the quilts, so to the post office they will go.
AMIL used to say that a quilt top magically became a quilt with the quilting finished! She was always happily astonished. Aren’t you delighted that these quilts will have been magically quilted before you next see them?!
Hugs!
Quilting can certainly transform a ho hum quilt top into something special!
I LOVE that red pineapple quilt!!!!! I remember seeing one by Thelma ‘cupcakesanddaisies’ that I loved too. Your border is lovely. I’ll be interested to see it after it comes back from the quilter!
She is pretty backed up, but I will be sure and share when I get it back in a couple of months.
I love the pineapple too but I don’t think I’ll get farther then the one block I made. So many others in line! I remember the summer quilt with the mason jars and blue ribbon. Some fun, unique blocks in that one. I have at least 2 tops to start finishing for this summer. I picked up a horrible gastroenteritis bug last week and was down for the count. So I will get back to the sewing room slowly here as I recover.
Oh, stomach flu is the absolute worst. The only good thing about it is that it doesn’t usually last too long. You will lose five or ten pounds though, so there’s that.
I remember that gorgeous pineapple quilt. remember amber’s pink and green one on IG? I bought the papers from her but still haven’t made it. ugh.
years ago I made some patterns from Moda Bake Shop. they were riddled with unclear directions and often had errors so I stopped looking at their stuff. It looks like they cleaned up their web site and organized everything. I just might find something fun to make…..
Moda Bake Shop patterns were always so bad. Multiple errors. It was like no one ever did a pattern check. I think Summer in the Country may have been the only complete sew-along I ever did with them. I didn’t have any issues with those patterns as I recall. It was a fun one.
I remember writing a blog post years ago in which I complained about Moda Bake Shop and said they needed to get their act together. I can think of one pattern designer who is notorious for making mistakes in her patterns. Or she used to before she hired someone to pattern check for her. Every time she put out a pattern you knew you had to wait to make it because inevitably there would be an Errata message to follow, saying, “Oh, sorry, don’t make 45 2 inch HSTS, it should be 2.5 inches….”
Cherry Garcia is my favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor! I almost always eat the frozen yogurt version, and then I tell myself that it was healthy!
My favorite too. I also am fond of Chubby Hubby and Chunky Monkey. I never bothered with the yogurt versions though. If I am going in that direction, I am in for the whole calorie experience.
