Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
One of my favorite old songs by Queen is on my lips today. Can you guess why? Because I finished my Applesauce quilt!
Cute as it is, I can’t say I am a fan of the pattern design. From the beginning, things were just slightly “off”. My blocks weren’t coming together quite right, with points being chopped off. I tweaked a few things and got the blocks to come out the correct size at last. Now, when I put my 3 1/2″ border units together, the borders measured nearly two inches too long! That meant I had to take in 10 seams of each border, just a hair, to make the border fit the quilt top. That kind of fudging is a real time-waster. My cutting, trimming and sewing is usually pretty darn accurate, so I am going to blame the pattern.
All’s well that ends well, so I am happy with my finished quilt top and will send it out for quilting.
Now I am on to today’s finish: getting the binding on my Sewcialites 2 quilt.

I give you credit that you worked thru the adjustments and made it fit. I think I would have made more square units to make that outside border bigger and then added a thin border between the two in order to make the math come out correctly. It looks much better your way, correctly, of course. But that is likely what I would have done.
I now have a traveling project that I only work on when I am at a retreat or bee. I do not work on it at home. I do not unpack it. Obviously there is no deadline and I am not in a hurry.
I have a two day retreat this week and I have no prep or packing, it and my travel machine and bag are always ready to go.
This takes away the stress.
I just didn’t have it in me to try and figure out the math. I probably should have, it would have saved time to just put a narrow background border all around.
Have fun on your retreat.
I really like that pattern. I too have made two quilts from Basic Grey fabrics. One of them has that background too. The other is in my stack of quilts that I’m not ready to part with.
The background is Basic Grey’s Grunge Roasted Marshmallow. I really like it, and bought more for the backing.
Oh that is just super with the border. It certainly was worth continuing to the end. Lovely – all of it.
Thanks Kerry. Luckily I had several podcasts to listen to while I fiddled with the border. I am happy with the results.
I love the end result! I especially like the fabric combinations in the individual blocks. They coordinate beautifully and while each is different they are consistent, giving a very cohesive feel to your end result. Well done!
I used three different Basic Grey collections from my stash: Cider, Nutmeg, and Persimmon were the names I think. I still have loads of fabric left!
I have had to work with borders too; so frustrating! A few times I have been able to fix it on the corner pieces, but it does make a nice finish in the end. I like your SIS blocks. They “dress up” the entire quilt.
They all came out perfectly at 3.5 inches. I had all the points lined up and then had to go fiddle with taking in multiple seams to make the border fit the quilt top. Ugh, frustrating.
this quilt is a beauty!! I so admire your diligence in reworking the border. I would have just added a “tiny” border of the background to make it work out which would not have been a stunning as what you did. Way to hang in there!!!
I should have done the math to add a narrow border. It would have taken less time!
Lovely quilt and the border sets it off! But it is annoying when borders don’t cooperate! Soooo much time spent resewing blocks by two threads to get it to fit. Your result is certainly worth it! ❤️
Thanks Kerry. It was worth it I guess, but there was a lot of fiddling involved!
Nicole,
You did your magic on the border because your quilt looks great!
I had taken such care to match up all the points on the border. I even pressed all the seams open. Then I had to go and take in umpteen seams to make the borders fit, so it was kind of a waste of time.
I agree with what everyone has commented about the finished product is stunning! Frustrating to go through with that many teensy tiny seams, but it is all worth it in the end. 🙂
I was listening to podcasts while I worked, so the time wasn’t a complete waste.
You have a beautiful finished top! Good for you sticking with it to the bitter end making the borders work! That has to be a great feeling of accomplishment!
I am delighted the quilt is done and am happy with it. I think it will look nice paired with the larger quilt in the same fabrics.
