Monday started out well. I had clean sheets on my bed and slept like a baby, my coffee was good in the morning, and I had a day that was wide open for whatever adventures I chose to embark upon. It turns out that my adventures consisted of sewing for a bit, taking the dog to the vet for a check up, starting a new book, and writing in my journal. And you know something? That was pretty perfect as a day goes.

My third Swoon block is sewn together, pressed nicely, and on the design wall. And does it look any different from the others? I sure don’t think so. I am so happy with my plaid placement. I recall when that collection came out, people were complaining all the time about how hard it was to work with the plaids in the collection. I think they add something really interesting, and I don’t mind the little extra time it takes to cut and sew them.
What is your opinion on plaids and directional fabrics? Do you avoid them or do you love the challenge they pose and the interest they add to your quilts?
I hope your week got off to a great start!

Your table piece is lovely.
I am not afraid of directional or plaid until they are part of a diagonal. Drives me crazy. Those swoon blocks are beautiful!
I meant to mention that the little table topper was made from leftover scraps from the green quilt on my bed.
Ughh…I think I will have to make to Swoon quilt lol!! Beautiful, Nicole!! And amazing work with the plaid!!
And look at your roses! Beautiful as well.
Now I want to make another Swoon block, with a darker center. It is so much fun to put those fabrics together. Absolutely everything works no matter how you combine the prints.
The top right one looks like the darker fabrics are narrow – but it is just an optical illusion. That’s the fun of playing with fabric colours. I like plaid. I did wonder about getting them in the same direction, but it’s a case of being scrappy and anything goes. I try not to fret over it.
Sounds like you had a lovely day. It’s sunny and warm here today – a rare occasion as most of us are wondering what the bright thing is in the sky and where is the rain. Or more likely when is the rain coming back!
Our rain came back during the night. So.tired.of.it.
I love this! I. Guessing you are doing the swoon 16? I have had the pattern for a long time. Might just have to dive in.
It is Swoon 16. The blocks are huge!
I don’t avoid plaids & directional fabrics but they’re not my favorites, either. I’m making a couple of throw pillows to go with a baby quilt & down to the end of the main fabric. It’s clouds that ARE directional & I had no choice but to use it on the last pillow back in a vertical direction, not horizontal like everything else. It’s an ‘extra’ so I’m not going to worry about it. really…I’m not… 😵💫
Directionals can be kind of fussy to work with. In my Bliss quilt project there is on print in the fabric collection I am using that is a diagonal. And it comes in the red, yellow, green, tan, and aqua prints in the group. It seems like every single block calls for that print in one color or another.
Oh how I love the fabric and the pattern. I’m sitting her dreaming of making this quilt now. I, too, have had the pattern for a few years. I do not mind plaids or directionals. Mostly because once I learned how to make flying geese blocks work it was no harder than anything else. I have a Christmas quilt top made with the Juniper fabric collection by Kate & Birdie. It had lots of plaids and the result is beautiful!
I agree, plaids add so much interest and texture to a quilt block.
I love plains! I remember being in 4H ans learning how to match them while making clothes- not my finest hour earlier 🤪 your table topper is gorgeous and so are the Swoon blocks. I’ve been eyeing a soon-to-come out plaid with a woodland theme – think I’ll give it a go!
Your day sounds terrific — a day full of “simple pleasures”. Your Swoon blocks all look beautiful!
what is it about clean sheets on the bed that makes me happy? no idea. I just love it.
that is going to be a really fab quilt when done.
