Another New Project?

It was a beautiful warm early Spring day today, just perfect for starching a fat quarter bundle prior to beginning a new project!  I am so happy that the weather is warming up and becoming a bit more sunny.  So tired of all the rain we have been getting (I know we need it, blah blah blah).  Give me some sun.

This fabric collection that I have selected for my project is by Kansas Troubles for Moda and is called Oak Haven (sounds like an assisted living facility).  My son gave it to me for Christmas and I have been waiting for some inspiration as to how I might use it.  Well, just the thing has appeared.  Six Moda designers are hosting a sew along called Moda Block Heads:  Lynn Hagmeier, Jo Morton, Betsy Chutchian, Carrie Nelson, Jan Patek and Lisa Bongean will come out with a total of 48 blocks for this sew along.  Each week a different designer will come out with a new block.  Click here for a link to the Moda blog for a description of the project and links to all the designers.  I just love these projects where you make a block every week and end up with a great quilt at the end of a year.  I actually have three of them going right now!  My Log Cabin blocks, the 2017 Triangle Gatherings and now Block Heads.

The first block is by Lynn Hagmeier (Kansas Troubles) and is called Whirligig.

Pre-starching the fabrics and pressing seams open will really give you an accurately pieced and flat block.

I had a lovely day off yesterday and spent it getting my fabrics ready for Moda Block Heads and making the first block.  I also put in a good amount of time making my Buzz Saw blocks and have over 50 of the 72 total blocks made.  This will go together quickly once I start sewing the blocks together.  Here are stacks of pressed and unpressed blocks:

Hope you all have a great weekend!  I plan to stay home and do absolutely nothing except sew!

  1. Yes!! Bring on the sunny warm weather!! We have had some 70 degree days lately but this weekend its back to 20’s and 30’s!! AGHHHHH. 🙂
I too am jumping in on the Block Head Sew Along. I haven’t decided on fabrics but may use my “scraps” of summery aqua and white….longing for summer and the beach. 🙂 Thanks for posting about your first block. All this starching is new to me but I am enjoying the results in the Triangle Gatherings blocks. Looking forward to seeing all your blocks, your first one looks great! Have a great weekend. 🙂

  2. Oh my goodness, you caved!!! Now, I think I might have to, too. Have a great weekend, Nicole. Did you get a lot of time with your sewing machine yesterday??

  3. I’m already in love with this quilt-along and one block a week is the perfect pace for me I’m always finding time to make one block and I think the blocks will always be fairly easy to make.
We had a little rain this week but now the sun is finally out again and I think the weekend will be sunny too. Have a wonderful weekend no matter the weather:-)

  4. Your block looks terrific! Did I see it on Carrie’s Moda blog today? I’ve been pressing seams open for awhile & find everything lies flatter & looks smoother–well worth the time it takes to do it!

  5. I’m joining on the Block-a-long too! Check out the facebook page they’ve set up…so many great ideas!

  6. Love your little quilt! Love your Buzz Saws! Love your Blochhead block! I love everything you put together and you have been really busy! I cannot decide on fabric for my Blockhead block. There is a new line coming out I might wait on…we shall see!
