Sewing Progress This Week

This has been a great week as far as sewing goes. I managed to get in some sewing time just about every day. The blocks above are the first two granny square blocks for my sister Andrea's neutral table runner. I love how it's coming together. I'll have to confer with her about the length. It could be four blocks long or perhaps five. There will be lattice spacers in between and some kind of narrow border on top and side.

I've been puttering around a bit and starched some fabric from Minick and Simpson's Roselyn collection. I bought quite a lot of that group which was all lovely reds, pinks, and creams. Since they have retired and there will be no more Minick and SImpson collections, I am feeling very nostalgic about their fabric and am treasuring the fabric in my stash that I still have of theirs. Fig Tree is doing a mystery Valentine's project, which got my attention, for which this red and pink group would be perfect. But of course, I am not doing any new sew-alongs this year. I am just playing around.

Speaking of 2025 sew-alongs that I will not be participating in, Riley Blake Designs is hosting a sew-along featuring their designers, with free patterns and a very pretty sampler quilt. It isn't a mystery, as the finished quilt diagram has been published.

I think it is a fun layout for a sampler quilt, which would really show off a fabric collection. And my gosh, if you have a ton of scraps, this is a no-brainer. I love seeing how the final layout will play out, as it is so helpful in planning color placement and fabric.

Of course, as I have said several times in the new year, I am not participating in any new sew-alongs. I am just fooling around in my sewing room.

Hope your week is going well. Dennis had his first physical therapy appointment on Tuesday, which went very well. He really likes his therapist, Travis, who is optimistic that Dennis will ultimately be out of the wheelchair and walking with a cane. He also has an appointment for his infusions, which will happen over a three-day period in the middle of February. It is hoped that these infusions will spark a surge of improvement in his condition.

So, all good here. Hope it is in your world as well.

  1. Dennis liking his physical therapist is huge. If you don’t click with the person you’re apt to resent the exercises & routine they present. Which means that you most likely won’t follow through at home. (personal experience) The reds & pinks are tempting, so stay strong about that Valentine’s project! The same with the sampler! Your sister’s runner is going to be dreamy…it already is!

  2. I am not thinking about the RBD too…scrappy would be my choice and it would be a donation quilt if I were doing it.

  3. I’m so glad Dennis is improving and you are getting time to play in your sewing room. I am not doing any sew alongs this year. I just don’t need to put that pressure on myself. I am working through my UFOs instead. I live about 20 miles from the Eaton fire so our church charity quilting group has decided to donate as many quilts as we can to the fire victims. So that will keep me busy for a bit.

  4. Just catching up with your last few posts! Wonderful to read all your positive tidbits! Great news about Dennis and glad to hear he likes his physio. I agree with Jan that it will make a huge difference in his recovery. And of course so happy to see you sewing more! I too am sad about Laurie and Polly’s retirement!😞 I’m thinking I need just a bit more of their fabulous fabric!

  5. I think of you every day and am so glad your husband’s therapy sessions are going well. YOUR therapy I’m assuming/hoping is getting time with your sewing!! Those chances to be creative, however fleeting are a real stress reliever for me. Have a great rest of your week and weekend!!

  6. love what you are making for your sister! that is just gonna be a gorgeous gorgeous understated runner. makes me want to make one. ;p
you should make a Minnick and Simpson pattern with your fabric. they have so many good ones. their patterns are really well done. i have had no time to sew this week but last week I did get about 30 3.5″ 9 patches done using their pattern and French General charm packs and and FQs. pattern is Adelide. (i think?)
PT is rough but it really does help for recovery. Are they going to come to the house for infusions? hope so. anything to help make it easier for you both.

  7. Such great news about Dennis and his therapist. I wish him all the best as he continues to recover. There you are making me laugh yet again with your “I’m not doing a sew along” yet showing the blocks you have made. You have always made a lot of progress on your own without keeping up the pace of an official sew along. I love seeing all the new projects you make, it’s very inspiring. It must feel really great to have a teensy bit of free time to sew again.

  8. Your first two blocks are so pretty, what a lovely piece this will be. Minick and Simpson are favorite designers of mine as well. I’m trying to find patterns that are ‘worthy’ of this fabric in my stash. 😂Encouraging news for Dennis! Having a good rapport with his therapist is key for success.

  9. Love your neutral blocks and fabric pull! Me thinks the lady does protest too much 🤣🤣 I see future not sewalongs. Love the inspiration and sounds like good news for your hubby!
