Still Making Bags

I've become obsessed with making these little bags. I am trying different patterns and have yet to find one that I love 100%. There is always some little detail that I don't care for it seems. Some of the patterns call for finishing the inside seams with binding that you make yourself. Seriously? I did it and it came out ok, but no, I don't think so.

This one came out pretty cute. It has unfinished seams inside, which is not ideal either. I want a pattern that allows me to turn things inside out so the lining forms a completely finished inside. I think Melanie Ham has a YouTube video showing how to make that version. I've hesitated watching it, because she passed away tragically and that's all I can think about when watching her channel. What a loss her passing was.

I am on my way out the door to get to the Bay Area for an eye doctor appointment tomorrow. I will be staying at my sister Kate's house. Not much time to blog the next couple of days, but I'll be back on Thursday with more updates on my bag-making saga.

I am leaving Dennis on his own for 24 hours, so I am sure hoping that goes without mishap!

  1. I make one like that using a ByAnnie pattern. She does use binding, but her bags always look nice. I love making them.
Good luck at the eye dr. Glad to hear Dennis is capable of spending a day on his own!

  2. Have you seen the Sew Together Bag by Sew Demented? It is awesome. I have made several for gifts, and they are much coveted. The interior is beautiful. It looks more complicated than it is, and there is an excellent YouTube tutorial.

  3. Your bags are super cute so far! I’m going to check the bags that commenters have mentioned. I usually zig-zag the inside seams, but finished would be nicer. Wishing both you & Dennis a good day while you’re out of town. Safe travels!

  4. As Carole said above, I also made a boxy bag pattern from By Annie, and did not like using the seam tape/binding method of the raw inside edges either. And as Jan said above, my usual is to zig zag the inside seams. I’d never seen a pattern making a complete lining, so will definitely check out Melanie Ham’s tutorial! It might just be a new favorite, and something I can experiment with in the next few days. Yay!

  5. I have not made those bags, so I don’t know, but my simplest method for finishing raw edges is French seams (wrong sides together, sew skinny seam, flip to right sides together and seam again).

  6. safe journey….have a glass of wine with your sister and have a good cry. you’ve effing earned it.
I’m sure Ryan will check in on Dennis. It’s all so stressful. Tell Archie to be a good boy while you’re gone.

  7. I make lots and lots of lined boxy pouches. I shared my construction method on my blog post for Feb. 21, 2018. You can make the pouch any size you want. Most of the time I cut the body pieces and lining 9 1/2″ x 12 1/2″. The handle is cut 4 1/2 x 11″. The one in the tutorial I made to hold a small knitting project so I made it longer for the needles. You are welcome to use any or all of my method. pattythequiltlady dot blogspot dot com.
