Remember Frivols?

Do you remember back in 2016 Moda Fabrics did something called Frivols?  Each month they came out with an adorable little tin that had a current fabric line and pattern from one of their designers. Finishing kits were available as well. The program was quite pricey, but I collected 11 out of the 12 tins and projects. I think I have sewn up perhaps three of them, which means the rest have been sitting on my shelf looking cute for almost 10 years.

That actually was the problem. They were almost too cute to open up and take apart. One of my favorites was Frivols 8, called "Brio", designed by American Jane (Sandy Klop). Sandy is known for her bright primary colors and 30s retro fabrics. This collection was called "Bread and Butter" and is the cutest thing ever.

My friend Carol, over at One Stitch At a Time, has been talking about going through her stash of kits and actually making some of them up. She mentioned Frivols and got my attention. We have chatted a bit and have decided to sew with one another and crack out this little kit. I may switch things up a bit and make my version a rectangular runner to fit my dining table. I think it will be adorable for this spring and summer. I. love the scrappy Bear's Paw block that is featured.

Stay tuned for more info, and go check out Carol's blog and see what she has to say!

Meanwhile, it has been raining cats and dogs over here in my neck of the woods. I've had to take a reluctant Archie out in the deluge to do his business. I am not sure which of us looks like the bigger dork: me in Dennis's rain gear or Archie in his doggie raincoat. We both look totally stupid.

  1. I have a dog walking rain coat very similar to that in red. Very nice to have a dog coat too, I do not. Wet dogs are not fun.
I can see taking apart a cute kit would definitely be a problem.
I made myself a quilt priority list in January. Working my way thru methodically. I started with 6 things on the list. Now I have 20.
But I am pleased to say I am cranking with my 1-2 hours a day of sewing time. I am current half way done with the top on #6.

  2. Loved Frivols!!! I wish they still had them!! I think you and Archie are adorable in your red outfits! Nicole you are the bee’s knees! You always look for the fun side despite the situation! Good on you!

  3. I love that pattern and fabric. When I looked at it on Modas’s blog, there is a correction to the pattern shown. Someone is selling that kit for $95 on eBay.

  4. I made most of the frivols. Some were more fun than others, but I loved that American Jane one. I made them all as directed and gave a few away as baby blankets to some nieces and nephews. I’m still using those cute tins for various fun purposes.
I recently had back surgery, and it felt so good to “graduate” from the walker to walking in my own. Dennis must feel great to have moved to the walker.

  5. I do remember Frivols. They were so cute and I was tempted to get several of them but they were just a
little out of my price range at the time.
Your table runner will be so bright and cute.

  6. Happy Valentines Day! ♥️ You and Archie look adorable in your matching red rain gear! 😊 I have 6 Frivols kits, they were to cute to cut! I’ve decided to empty the tins this year. I didn’t think of setting them as a rectangle, that would work better for my space. Thanks for the suggestion! Glad Dennis has progressed from the w/c to the walker. Slow and steady! Take care!

  7. I knew at the time Frivols were being sold that I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to use them! Good for you & Carol to take the plunge together! You & Archie look ready for anything in your rain gear. He’s a good sport to let you dress him up–my dog would probably refuse to go outside if I tried to put her in a coat. Stay warm & dry! ☔️💦

  8. You and Archie are ready to go! Lots of rain down here in So Cal too, but probably not as much as you have received.
Yes I remember how adorable the Frivols tins were, and that I did not have the budget for them.

  9. I remember Frivols and the tins are/were so cute. I just had one quilted recently! I don’t know how long it had been “hanging” around.
Oh, how I remember taking a dog out in the rain…no fun for either of us!

  10. rain gear is the only way I survive. I remember Frivols very well. It was a clever marketing plan.
I had some leftover American Jane fabric from a
bundle I bought 10 yrs ago. I made a bunch of hour glass blocks with them a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know if she is still designing fabric. I love her pattern designs. very fun and retro.
have a great weekend. it’s supposed to be sunny.

  11. I think I bought 3 Frivols. Amazingly I have made them all, although it took more than five years.
I didn’t have the ones you show so I look forward to seeing how they turn out.

  12. I saved my pennies and purchased 3 Frivols. I hang the Bear Paw every summer after July 4th. It is one of my favorite wall quilts ever!

  13. If anyone is interested, you can still pick up Frivols on eBay– some of them are about $35 which is less expensive than originally priced, I believe. I also see a new series that Moda is coming up with– the first releases feature Betsy Chutchian and Camille Roskelley and they are coming out in August. It’s called “Collectors Series Tins” and they each have a mini charm pack and a tiny quilt pattern. Let’s hope I don’t like them very much– I have Frivols to finish!

  14. I broke out a Frivols last fall, number 6, Strawberry Fields Revisited. I have so many Fig Tree scraps, I turned it into a bed size quilt!

  15. Love your rain outfits and they match Valentines Day! Can’t believe it’s been almost 10 years since frivols came out! I’ll have to dig through mine and see if I can find the one you’re working on., I may have to join you!

  16. I remember Frivols! Can’t wait to see your scrappy bear paw – congrats on digging out an older kit and making it up 🎉 You and Archie look adorable in your matching rain gear 🥰
