Packing Up

No, I am not moving. We are getting new carpeting! This event requires me to remove everything from the closet floors in the bedrooms. We have four of them and there is a lot of stuff on the floors.

In addition, I have to pack up the contents of all the dresser drawers to make moving the furniture an easier job. Oh my gosh, this is such a big job. I worked for hours in the sewing room yesterday and am not even half way finished.

Well, I did get the floor cleaned out. I also emptied the bookcase and ended up getting rid of more than half the outdated quilting books I had in there. The dresser is going to be a job, as I have just been stuffing random things in it for the past 12 years we have lived in this house. Most of it can probably go. I've discovered a slew of small kits that I will never make, so I hope I can sell some of them on eBay. Also, the number of charm packs I have collected over the years is ridiculous. Stop buying things, Nicole. Just stop.

So where to put the boxes of stuff I need to temporarily store while the carpet is being installed? I've been putting them all in the shower in the upstairs bathroom. What I have in there at this point is about a third of what is to be added over the next few days. I have a terrible vision in my head of the entire shower floor giving way and all the boxes going straight through to the first floor, leaving a gaping hole where the upstairs shower used to be. Pray that doesn't happen. It won't, right?

  1. OOOHhh My condolences!! It’s been a few years, but we recarpeted the whole house in stages after a good sale for Berkshire Hathaway shareholders and Warren Buffet’s infamous Nebraska Furniture Mart. It was painful, but of course worth it in the end. I’m feeling a bit validated in the number of jelly rolls and charm packs that inhabit my downstairs!! I’m sure my house is much smaller, but oh dear can I cram them in my half basement! Be careful and don’t strain any muscles!!!

  2. Oh gosh I’m facing the same task soon. Good luck!!
I’m interested in how you go about selling kits on eBay. Please keep us posted on how that process goes.

  3. This trick was a lifesaver when we recarpeted. Lay all your hanging clothes with hangers in your bathtub. Keeps them fairly wrinckle free too.

  4. What a job but the new carpet will be worth it! The added bonus is culling things you longer need! If you have any Mon Ami charm packs by Basic Grey I would be glad to purchase them from you!😃

  5. What a busy week you’re going to have! The idea to put boxes in the shower is great! When we had our kitchen remodeled we put the drawers in another room stacked on each other. Could you do that the dresser drawers on the bathroom floor rather than pack them up? Let us know when you list your goodies on eBay–which I imagine won’t happen for awhile with all you’ve got to deal with right now!

  6. Oh what fun!!!!! I hope the new carpet is wonderful so you decide it was worth it!
I love your book columns. I read them and then send them to a couple of friends who love them too!!!!!

  7. Getting new carpeting is as hard as moving, as I remember. What a lot of work. Fingers crossed for strong floor joists.
I had my carpets deep cleaned a few weeks ago and I still feel as if I am living in a new house, so totally NEW carpet will be wonderful.

  8. re-carpeting is almost like moving. expensive, stressful, and hard work. may the force be with you! I never ever want to do that again…
