Yesterday was the release day for the 6th block in the Riley Blake Challenge, and I got it made. It is called Square Knot by Jennifer Long, and I think it is very interesting. It literally poured rain every single minute of the day, so I had nothing else to tempt me! The construction was fairly simple, but I had a couple of directional fabrics in the mix, so I had to have my wits about me. The design of the “knots” would be spoiled if one of the fabrics suddenly seemed to be going in a different direction.
These blocks are fun, and I am glad I decided to do the sew-along this year. Here are all six blocks that I’ve made so far.

Today I plan to move on to one of my other projects, perhaps Bliss or Swoon. The Fat Quarter Shop’s Sewcialites Sew-Along starts this week, so I will tune in and see how that is going. Are any of you going to do the Sewcialites project? They have turned out pretty well in the past, and there is a choice of block sizes to choose from: 3″, 6″, and 9″.
This is the last Sewcialites quilt I made, and I was pleased with how it turned out. However, I substituted some blocks and used a completely different setting…

I’m still dithering about whether to do that project. I haven’t prepped any fabric, and I do have plenty of other things going on. I am also not absolutely *loving* the blocks and setting they are showing. I may watch for a few weeks and see how much fun I’m missing out on!

I was glad when I got down to the bottom of your post and you said – not absolutely loving Sewcialites Sew-Along quilts. I clicked over to the link and I agree. My words to describe them are messy and muddy, the eye does not know where to go.
I would be very interested if you would please add a photo next to your last Sewcialites Sew-Along quilt (in your post above) with what theirs looked like that year. Yours is lovely. I am curious what the original quilt was.
I am demonstrating flange binding for two groups. One is in March, the other is in April. I bound four quilts using different binding width measurements and different presser feet. All four are labeled. It is interesting to see the differences and decide which one likes best. I am also binding a quilt at each demonstration. So this little project has allowed me to get caught up with binding!
Thanks for the photo. You were smart to change your setting.
Oooh, that is an interesting block! Nice work!
It was fun to make! The directional fabric was a challenge, but you just have to be careful when cutting so the piece goes in the right direction.
I’m impressed with the Square Knot block. I see what you mean about having to be on top of your game with the directional fabric! You have to admit there’s never a dull moment in your sewing room!
That’s for sure. I am sure my having umpteen projects going on at once would drive a lot of people batty, but I am rarely bored!
