I have made a tiny bit of progress on this Halloween Figs project. As a matter of fact, I have all the blocks finished except for one gigantic applique monster block that goes where the empty space is in the lower right corner. I have been procrastinating because I know I will need to devote the entire day to it. It involves changing out the feet and settings on my Bernina, tracing and cutting out the applique pieces and fusing interfacing to them, and then doing the actual applique stitching, which requires several changes of thread colors.
We are off to the Bay Area for my husband’s cataract surgery and follow-up, so I probably won’t post tomorrow. Sara wants to do a book podcast for November, so that will be coming up. Our tentative topic will be suggestions for bookish gifts for the people in our lives.
One thing I am absolutely loving about my new blog site is how interactive the comments are. If you are only reading what I post, you are really missing out. Some of the best content can be found in the comments left by other readers.
Here is an example: we were talking about the amnesia effect that occurs after one has minor surgery. You recall going “under’ and waking up, but nothing about the surgery itself, even if it was the “twilight” type, where you are sort of conscious. I joked that my husband must be under that amnesia effect all the time because he can never seem to remember things we JUST talked about.

Vickie left a comment that she has a solution for that, and it was brilliant. She sets a Reminder on her iPhone to tell her “shut the garage door at dusk each night,” or “take my pills at 8:00 AM daily,” or “manicure at 11:30 on Tuesday”. You can either do it through Siri or on the Reminder app that comes on all iPhones. I didn’t even know it existed! I swear my iPhone is full of hidden features that would make my life so much easier if I only I knew what they were.
So you can be sure I am going to set up my phone AND my husband’s with all the important reminders that we need to function on a daily basis.
I just love it when my readers provide us all with such useful information!

I also use the “send later” function (texts, iPhone to iPhone) to remind my husband. We are now to the point where he asked me to tell my phone to send him a reminder at exactly the right time. So we have the conversation and I set my phone at 8am, he receives the reminder exactly at 4pm when he needs it. Neither of us has to remember. I have confidence, things get done.
Oh yes! Phone alarms. I don’t think our clock would ever get wound consistently if not for an every 4 day alarm.
I use the Siri reminder on my phone all.the.time! That and post-it notes!!
The colours are just so pretty, Nicole and very balanced so great job on that. I am going to email you a pic of the quilt that i finished on Sunday…it is the same feel of quilt done in brights for my daughter. I am a third of the way through Frank and Red and it is already pulling on my heartstrings. Thanks for the recommendation.
Halloween Figs is a fabulous quilt! Soon you’ll have a finish! Thanks for the tips using your iPhone! I certainly didn’t know about those features!
The Halloween Figs quilt is almost at the finish line! A day to produce that last big block will appear when you’re least expecting it! I’m sure many of us are under-utilizing the helpful features on our iPhones. Thanks for sharing tips. I enjoy the new format reading comments & your replies–it’s like having a conversation with friends we’ve never met! Wishing Dennis an easy surgery today!
I’ve always read the comments. You have some funny followers and I have found some good quilting advice. The difference is now I can tell them I read their comment and enjoyed it.
I will NEVER get over hearing about Kerry’s sister-in-law and Halloween. It was just too funny.
The quilt is looking gorgeous! For me, it’s just quicker to hand applique. Plus, I can do it in bed.
Safe journey…..
Figs is looking super, looking forward to seeing the applique. Glad your husband’s surgery went well too. My husband left the chickens run and doors open last night, but they do have an electric fence to protect. He wondered why they were all scratching about outside first thing. The other week he forgot to let them out of their house – they were a bit hungry when I found them – although our rooster didn’t make a peep! I was the one with a bad memory – but I guess I’m more consistent while he is getting worse!
Wishing y’all well tomorrow and now that Dennis know what to expect, so it will be much more pleasant.
Figs is such an interesting quilt and I look forward to seeing the large monster in the lower right corner when you’ve had uninterrupted time to make him/her/it!
I finished the machine quilting on doll quilt one today and have just the binding to make and sew on, then the label. Somehow, I thought I’d be able to machine quilt the 2nd and larger doll quilt today, but no way. My machine is threaded with the right variegated thread for tomorrow.
Hugs!
