Now that water polo season is over, Eva and I are back in the kitchen doing some baking. In the photo above, you can see she has an eager assistant. He is very keen to be of some use. Like maybe sampling the dough?
This isn’t a food blog, but I have to share the recipe for the cookies we made. They are Mrs. Field’s Double-Rich Chocolate Cookies. Without a doubt, they are the best chocolate-chocolate-chip cookies I’ve ever eaten.

Back in the 80s, Mrs Field’s Cookie shops were in every mall. While not as prevalent these days, my research tells me there are 300 franchise locations still in existence. I remember being worn out from shopping and stopping for one of her chocolate chip cookies between Macy’s and Nordstrom, and feeling quite refreshed from the sugar hit.
I did buy Debbie Field’s cookbook back in the day, probably just for her ubiquitous chocolate chip cookie recipe, and still have it. I pulled it out yesterday to see if there was anything Eva and I might want to make and we hit upon this recipe. It did not disappoint!
I would describe these cookies as soft, fudgy, and intensely chocolately, with a somewhat brownie-like texture. The dough contains cocoa powder, but the chocolate factor is enhanced with a 12-oz. bag of chocolate chips.
One unique thing about the baking method for these cookies is that they bake at 300 degrees F. My theory is that the lower temperature slows the dough’s spread, helping the cookies keep their shape, even though they are loaded with butter and chocolate chips. They bake for 21 minutes and you want to be sure not to overbake these. They won’t look quite done when you take them out of the oven, but trust me, they will be.
It sure felt good to be back in the kitchen with my girl!
Didn’t we have fun yesterday talking about Mac and Cheese? I am going to try the stovetop/roux method with the addition of some shallots and Velveeta and see what happens. I think I will also put it in a baking dish and cook it in the oven for 15 more minutes or so. I sure did get a lot of great suggestions for variations on the recipe. Don’t miss out on reading the comments, as you will get so many ideas!

Thank you for the recommendation, I will be making the cookies soon!
I was really pleased with how great they turned out. I have never baked cookies at 300 before!
It’s nice to see Eva back doing some baking! You ought to go through your blog & pull out the photos from over the years of her learning her way around the kitchen! She’s going to remember & carry on your traditions for her own family one day! No chocolate for dogs, Archie!
He is a super fussy eater, so it’s questionable if he would even want to try chocolate. But I wouldn’t take the chance!
Oh, YUM! How many cookies did you and Eva make? How many were left an hour afterwards?! Wink, wink!!
What fun for Eva to be back in the kitchen with you!
Yep, Archie will have to have only suitable dog treats.
Hugs!
Actually, the recipe made around 4 dozen, and I sent the first batch home with her. I have a whole cookie jar sitting on the counter that Dennis and I won’t be able to eat. Maybe I will stick some in the freezer for another day.
I’m still trying to lose 6 lbs over here….and failing. ;p I never get tired a fresh cookies. Sun is supposed to come out starting today. I gave the dog a bath yesterday and he is molting. unbelievable.
Oh, the holidays are a challenging time to lose weight. I always give myself some grace in December and then buckle down to undo the damage in January.
I just picked Archie up from the groomer and he looks magnificent. Let’s see if I can keep him that way for at least a week!
This is off topic but wondering if you are going to do the Riley Blake sew along in January. The pattern is pretty and the cutting instructions are posted but since it doesn’t show the blocks clearly, I would be hesitant to cut ahead of time.
