Reconsidering Moda BlockHeads 6

Moda BlockHeads has been going on for three weeks at this point, and so far, I am feeling underwhelmed.

I didn't love the first two block offerings and think I may sit back and see how this sew-along unfolds before I spend any more time making blocks. If future blocks are more challenging and innovative, I may change my mind and dive back in. I can always catch up if need be.

Are any of you doing this BlockHeads 6 sew-along? What are your thoughts?

Meanwhile, I have picked up a couple of unfinished projects that were abandoned when my husband's health was compromised last fall.

Remember Strawberry Garden? I am on the eighth set of blocks! It is summery, without being red, white, and blue. I think I may pick this up for now.

These are my pretty fabrics. I will say they are super yummy. They make me happy.

Another thing that made me happy is this loaf of sourdough I made on Sunday. I think it may be my best ever. The past three loaves have actually ended in failure because my dough overproofed. (Or is it overproved?). Anyway, leaving it out on the counter overnight was a bad idea. Our house is too warm now, and the yeasty starter got carried away and puffed up the dough up into a wet sticky mess. I have a new time table now, where I stick the dough in the fridge overnight, take it out in the morning and let it rise one last time before baking. I can keep an eye on it and bake it at the exact right time before it rises too much.

Hope your week gets off to a great start! Eva is staying with us all week long, and ta da, it is my birthday this week!

  1. I’m collecting the Blockhead 6 patterns but haven’t made any yet. I’m not much of a mystery quilt person so I think I’ll just collect and use what I like when the time is right.

  2. I’ve been looking at the patterns, but I have so many projects! I think why add more???? I’ve never made sourdough, my husband loves it but it seems like a lot of work. Happy birthday and I hope you have a wonderful week! Today I’m taking my granddaughter shopping for her birthday (she turned 17 on the 6th), we do lunch and have a wonderful time! I love your blog, thank you again for sharing your time and life with us!!

  3. Happy birthday Nicole. Have a great week with your granddaughter; reading; quilting; baking and making memories.

  4. Happy Birthday week. Sounds like fun to have Eva for the week. I am also collecting the patterns for Blockheads but not joining in. I do look at the posts but am amazed at the constant repeat of the same questions. Not sure I can watch for the entire 6 months.

  5. Happy Birthday!🎈🎂Eva staying with you this week is sure to be one of your best presents. I’m not doing the Moda Blockheads. Too many other projects that need my attention. I enjoy baking sourdough bread too. Great loaf! 🍞😋

  6. Have a great birthday week! The Strawberry Garden fabrics are lovely. My husband makes sourdough bread – it is so yummy! I am underwhelmed by the Moda Blockheads 6 as well. I have gathered the patterns but have not sewn any yet. As someone else stated, there are so many good patterns out there!

  7. I made sour dough this past weekend too. I use the recipes and proofing/baking timelines from theperfectloaf.com . Maurizio Leo is a good coach and has an extensive library of recipes for sourdough.
Hope you enjoy your birthday week!

  8. Happy Birthday to you!! May the day be great. May you be well celebrated. And may this be a very good year.
    All the best!

  9. I don’t join in SAL’s but enjoy looking at others’ progress. If you’re not feeling this one then I’d say spend your sewing time on a project you DO enjoy! Have a great birthday week with Eva! I’ll look forward to seeing what the two of you bake, too! Happy birthday! 🎉🎂

  10. Strawberry Fields is a beautiful summery project I’m not impressed by Block Head 6, I’ve many other quilts to work on. Your sour dough loaf looks perfect. Happy Birthday! Have a wonderful week with Eva.

  11. What a wonderful way to spend your birthday week – sewing and having Eva visit – enjoy every minute. I was out for Moda Blockheads when I learned they were 9″ blocks – I was hoping for 12 or 6 inch options. Will be anxious to see your Strawberry Garden progress – mine stalled after month 5 and I’m onto a different BOM right now.

  12. yay for sourdough!!! i could live on it…really, i could. have a wonderful week doing all the things you enjoy and ignore everything else. that’s my coping advice.

  13. I had heard that this blocks for this blockheads were from the “My Favorite Color is Still Moda” pattern. I don’t think they have done a good job of communicating that, especially since i think it impacts what you use for the background on the blocks. But looking at that pattern should give an idea of what is to come.

  14. Your sourdough looks delicious! Can you give some tips, hints and maybe a recipe? I’ve always wanted to make it! Have a fabulous Birthday with your family and a terrific year! I agree with other commenters… if you aren’t feeling Blk Head 6 don’t waste your precious time! I love the Fig Tree one you started!

  15. Happy Birthday! I’ve never done a Blockheads but am sewing along with a couple friends as I have a bundle I would like to dig into. I do not care for mystery quilts or the layout I’ve seen so far, but I figure the usual lattice and cornerstones will work if I need it. I’m not on Facebook and won’t see progress of people I don’t even know, so I won’t be tempted or frustrated with all that!! My two friends are all I need. I guess I’m up for this challenge. Looking forward to your books.

  16. Happy Birthday! And enjoy your time with Eva. I am downloading the Moda 6 blocks but I really am not feeling it. I have so any others to work on! Sometime I will have to try making sourdough bread. We both enjoy it when bought. It’s gotta be better fresh!

  17. How did I miss this the first time reading? Happy birthday, Nicole! Hope this year will have significantly fewer unwelcome surprises, and many more happy surprises!
