I have found my second setting for the Moda BlockHeads 3 quilt blocks. I've nearly got the 8-inch blocks assembled into another quilt top, which I will share with you in the next day or so. In this setting, I have combined the 12-inch blocks and most of the 6-inch blocks into the top you see above. I have yet to actually sew the blocks together and will rearrange some of them before the final sewing. I see some that need other placement for sure.
There is one block that stands out like a sore thumb. Which one does not belong? Can you spot it?
It is the 12 " block on the lower right with the dozens of half-square triangles. It was a Lisa Bongean block and to my eye, it does not work in this quilt at all. So say bye-bye, because it will be replaced with something lighter and more balanced with the other blocks.
To give credit where credit is due: I have been stealing getting inspiration from Sheri McConnell at A Quilting Life a lot lately. I did some research and found her setting for Moda BlockHeads 3, which you see above. It is similar to the massive setting that I recently picked apart, but contains about two dozen fewer blocks!
The quilt will be close to 72 inches square, which is a favorite size for me. At this point, I have no ideas as to how to border the quilt, but I'll take things a step at a time.
For all the unsewing, I have to say, the results of this take-apart venture have been a much better outcome than what I had previously.
Wednesday, May 28 (yesterday) was the first day of the Moda BlockHeads 6 sew-along. I have vowed to finish these Moda BH 3 tops before I dive into the new project, but that will be happening soon!

Be still my heart! This quilt is wonderful!!
I would put the HST block in the center with dark blocks in the corners.
Looking good. Congrats on the the”new” project.
what if you use the HST as your middle block?
Consider having no border. Or just a small border of background fabric. Just a contrasting binding. The blocks are enough interest, and it will keep the quilt having a lighter feel. I’ve done that a few times and have really enjoyed the effect.
Wow – that setting is so much better! I’m kind of digging the HST block – have you tried it in the center? But you’re right, it kind of steals the attention because it’s different looking than the others because the color goes all the way out to the edges while the other blocks seem to “float.” Maybe it would make a great pillow to go on the bed that the quilt will occupy? Keep going, it’s fabulous!
I agree with Lisa D. that perhaps the HST block would make a decorative pillow for the bed. And, I wouldn’t put a border on at all. A dark binding would ‘frame’ it but not draw attention away from the blocks themselves. You’ve persevered & come up with a great solution to your problem! 👏👏👏
The dark circular log cabin looks out of place to me…like a giant period! Every other block has a background/light color in it. So interesting that other commenters think it’s another block! We all see things differently, don’t we?
the tribe has spoken, “PUT THE LISA BONGEEN BLOCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE QUILT!” It’s fabulous. to quote Lisa from above, “i’m kinda digging that HST block.”
I love how the 6″ blocks offset the 12″ blocks! Seems to let the eye float over it all and see each one. Glad you are taking the time to fix it the overly busy top and making several!
