Are you looking forward to Halloween yet? I know, I know, it is still Spring, why would anyone be thinking of Fall holidays? Well, if you have a quilt top and have a hope of having it quilted by then, you need to be planning ahead. I have a Halloween quilt top that has been languishing in the closet for a long time. Since 2014, as a matter of fact. I may not get things done in a timely manner, but I do circle back to my projects eventually.

This is a fun, scrappy quilt that I thoroughly enjoyed making, but am just now getting around to having quilted. Oh well, it happens. This pattern is called Lucy, and is an older one by Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. You can still purchase the pdf download pattern on Fat Quarter Shop.
The fun thing about this pattern is that it is just two blocks, and it is totally 100% scrappy. It calls for fat 8th scraps (or smaller) of oranges and blacks. I think some low-volume prints (with an orange or black motif) work well in the mix as well. If you have been making Halloween quilts for years, I would bet you have a fair stash of leftover fabrics. Why not put them to use in this scrappy quilt? Shop at home, use it up.
The alternate block in this quilt would lend itself so well to custom quilting. A pumpkin or other Fall design would go so well in that big light space. I am not going to spring for custom quilting, but I bet my quilter will have an idea for a design that will be appropriate and show up well in that large light space.
I know I make a lot of sampler style quilts, but I have to admit there is something really special about a simple quilt with one focal block that is repeated. And I go for scrappy every time!

Do you know whatever happened to Carrie Nelson? She was such a great designer, and I was so glad when Moda picked her up. But all of a sudden, I never see her name or her work any more.
This quilt is a winner – like everything else Carrie designed.
Where is Carrie Nelson? Such a great designer – I made sooo very many of her patterns (some more than once) and bought almost all! I really miss her.
I Love your quilt and makes me want to pull out the Lucy pattern and get it done! Thanks for reminding me of it!
There seems to be a theme with your viewers! I was also going to ask where Carrie is!? I miss the days of the old Moda Bake Shop. And twist my rubber arm…I bought the pdf of this pattern. Now what two colours to choose?!?! Have a great day, Nicole!
I too love all Carries patterns and sense of humor. I saw what I think was a fairly recent picture of Carrie on Laurie Simpson’s instagram Or Facebook page. They were together having fun.
Love your quilt and look forward to seeing what patterns your long arm quilter selects for you. I could see a bat or maybe a spider in the light spaces – something ghoulish!!
Last time you mentioned Carrie Nelson I was all over the ‘net looking for her patterns. The library had one of her books and I saved a few patterns from there. Time to find those again! P.S. If you can do Christmas in July, why not Halloween in May?!!!
What a great quilt, I look forward to seeing what magic your quilter does with quilting. I think I have all of Miss Rosie’s (Carrie Nelson) published quilt books and many of her single patterns. I love her planned scrappy style. Have a great day! 🌷
I, too, am a long-time fan of Carrie Nelson’s patterns. Her Schnibbles patterns were fun & quick little quilts to make! Your Lucy quilt will be fun to use at Halloween & I look forward to seeing the quilting you choose.
you know how I feel about Carrie. I really wish she would pop up somewhere with her cute little dog.
I love this pattern. my halloween quilt is at the quilters already. I’m supposed to get it back in September. yay! I finished the halloween spools backing the other day. It was from 2016 so I can relate.
wish I could sew but my hands are killing me.
Love your quilt but would likely never do a Halloween quilt, I’ve hated Halloween since I was a kid! Now if one of my granddaughters asked me to make one for her I would, but that’s entirely different! 😂 This quilt would be a beautiful quilt in most any colors!!!
I remember that quilt! I think I still have a box full of those fabrics cut in strips waiting to be sewn 🤣 guess I better get to it! I also kind of remember them doing spiderwebs in those blank spaces which would be very cool!
Nicole I think we are twin sisters of a different mother! I laughed out loud reading that Halloween quilt has languished since 2014! My quilt friends tease me all the time about doing that or putting unfinished projects in Safeway bags to “marinate”!
I also miss Carrie!!! She really ignited my love for quilting.
I love all Carries patterns. I’ve had this on my list for a long time. Regret not getting the kit, but I have enough scraps to make it! Always wonder what happened to her. Glad to see your husband doing so well.
I too have been trying to find out what happened to Carrie. It’s like she vanished from our quilty lives without a trace.
