Family Time and a New Cook Book

This weekend Eva's family came over with little Winston, the Winery Westie and he and Archie had a playdate. I don't know which dog chased the other one more, but they sure had fun and wore themselves out.

I bought a new cookbook recently, Everyday Comfort by Holly Nilsson, a blogger (Spend With Pennies) who I enjoy very much. It is so full of great-sounding recipes for every day that I practically used up a whole pack of post-it flags!

Eva spent the night last night because her dad and her stepmom were going to an event. It was a great opportunity to try a couple of kid-friendly recipes. I chose Mac and Cheese and Meatloaf, and have to say they both turned out great.

Here they are, right out of the oven. I probably should have taken the mac and cheese out a bit sooner. But it was great nevertheless!

Both recipes tasted just the way they should. If you are looking for a new cookbook with recipes you will actually make for your family, this could be a good choice.

Eva rounded the meal out by making a salad. I swear that girl grows an inch a month. She is taller than I am! But, as my family loves to point out, pretty much everyone is taller than I am. She's all legs like a colt.

Hope your week is going well! Not a ton of sewing happening, as I am spending my time putting everything back that I packed up for the carpet installation.  It will be over soon.

  1. Bet Archie and Winston had a lot of fun! They are both so cute! I discovered Spend with Pennies a few years ago while searching for a recipe online – she is great! I’ll be checking out the cookbook – I absolutely love Mac and cheese and always looking for a new recipe! Thanks for such a wonderful newsy blog – I love how you discuss so much more than quilting! Have a wonderful day

  2. I agree sew😉 much with Kelli’s comment. Your content is spot on. You have such a wonderful relationship with your granddaughter! She will cherish it. And those doggos look like they are having a blast. Only one thing is missing…me at the dinner table.🤣🤣

  3. Looks like fun!
I noticed your meatloaf is flatter than traditional. Have you always done flatter?
I made meatloaf in bread loaf pans for years. I was always worried it was not done all the way through. And often there was too much moisture. I switched to 8×8 or 9×9 pans last year and I think flatter works much better.

  4. Let’s count me in on the cheers for what you share with us. Eva looks very comfortable in the kitchen! The pups look like they had a fun time together doing what dogs love to do–run around & chase! Thanks for sharing the new cookbook suggestion because I’m definitely in need of ideas to get out of the same.old.meal.rut.

  5. I have made several of Holly’s recipes and I’ll have to try both of these. My daughter has been asking why we never try new pasta recipes so the Mac and cheese will be great! I love seeing Eva in shorts! We are still a long ways from shorts weather here!! Have a great day, Nicole!

  6. Those 2 doggies look like they are having so much fun playing together! Your 2 dinner dishes are mouth-watering delicious looking. Will have to check out some of her recipes on her blog!
Nice to see Eva and I can believe her growth spurt. I remember my mom made jokes about feeding me “puppy chow” because I was growing so fast in the 7th/8th/9th grades!

  7. Meatloaf looks delicious and Eva is growing up so fast! I have a teeny tiny granddaughter so won’t be the shortest in my family 🤣
