Block One Cali & Co BOM

Don't ask me how I did it, but in between the Great Closet Clean Out activity, I got all my fabrics cut out for the Cali & Co BOM! Woohoo, look at me go.

I have always enjoyed the cutting process and don't find it boring at all. I get in the zone and just have at it, getting my pieces all cut and lined up and ready to sew.

Background strips are all cut as well, and will be subcut later depending on block instructions.

And here is Block One. It was easy construction and fun to play with those bright colors. Kind of like choosing your Crayolas out of the box.

I will caution any of you making the blocks, that you do need to take care when sewing those colorful outer sew and flip pieces on. It is easy to be over just a thread and you've cut off the point of the outer square. I had to redo the stitching on two of those corners so I didn't lose my points. I will get a technique going for the future blocks, all of which have those outer sew and flip squares/triangles.

I am mostly using a fat eighth bundle of Cali & Co, but also have scraps left over from a couple of other of Corey Yoder's collections. I am really enjoying working with these bright cheerful colors. It seems just right for a spring and summer project.

Are any of you doing this sew-along? What fabrics are you using?

  1. I bought 2 (yes, 2. I have no idea why!) Fat Quarter bundles and yardage of Fruit Cocktail quite awhile ago. I found I really love that fabric! I plan on also using the leftovers from the Triple Barnstar quilt pattern in Abloom to make another. I scored a Fat Quarter Bundle a couple of months ago and I’m determined to finish the quilt before the fabric comes out. I just have 1/2 of the binding to finish. Your block is so cheerful!

  2. That is really beautiful! I can imagine those big flip and stitch corners are going to be eye poppers when all the blocks are stitched together. Go girl!

  3. It’s so satisfying to look at the colorful stacks of cut fabric! They look so neat & tidy. Those bright, cheery colors will have you smiling as you stitch them together!

  4. I like the cutting process as well, I like having projects ready to sew whenever the mood strikes me. This quilt is going to be so fun to sew with these beautiful fabrics. I think starching fabrics prior to cutting is the best thing since sliced bread! After seeing a post or video by Lisa Bonjean of Primitive Gatherings I bought a spray can trigger. It’s in the spray paint section and it really works well keeping my index finger from aching when starching. Have fun sewing these fun blocks!

  5. I’m on team cutting, too. ;p I also use to love hand sewing the binding on quilts(back in the day).
I saw the same thing Sandra mentioned but it was Carrie yrs ago.
Have fun sewing and enjoy the sunshine because rain is coming again???? I’m so confused about the weather.
