Zippy Bags Revisited

I adore making little zippered bags for glasses, cosmetics, toiletries, and so many other purposes. I recently switched to a smaller purse and don't have a tiny cosmetic bag that holds just a couple of lipsticks and a nail file. All my other cosmetic pouches could hold the products for a full face of makeup!

I found the pattern I have used in the past, but it always takes me a minute to get back up to speed when I haven't made one for awhile. I did find a tutorial on YouTube for this exact bag, which was helpful to refresh my memory. The pattern is Terry Atkinson's "Cash and Carry" bag

The size of the bag is completely customizable. You can see in the photo below that you construct it in one long piece, then cut your front and back out the length you like. I kind of wish I'd made this one a tiny bit taller and wider. It finished at about 3 1/2 x 6 1/2", and I think I'll make another one an inch taller and an inch  longer.

I love putting in zippers. I've done enough that I'm pretty good at it. Don't be afraid of zippers, they aren't that bad, really.

This bag did go together super quickly and it makes me want to make more. I have been obsessed with my Minick and Simpson scraps/stash lately, and this would be a fun way to use up some of that fabric.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. OMG – lightbulb moment. I am always transferring the small little personal items from purse to purse – if they were always in one of these bags, transfer and finding what I want would be so much easier. And I can customize the size. Duh! Thanks for the inspiration.

  2. You are a whirlwind again! Yay! Thanks for inspiring us all to NOT start new stitch-a-longs, but to make the blocks anyway— heehee. Your last post had me on the floor laughing. I’m taking it as a sign to NOT start anything new myself, but maybe just make the blocks without really starting anything new. 🙂 The Lori Holt Vintage Christmas is one that I’m thinking of not really “starting” this year. Have a great weekend!

  3. I jumped on the zipper bag bandwagon back when you first shared them. You’re absolutely correct…the zippers are easy-peasy on those patterns! It’s great to see you having some fun sewing up a storm again! 😊

  4. Oh those bags are so cute and easy. I’ve made a variety of styles and sizes before also. My co-workers got boxy bags for Christmas about 10 years ago, and then again last year. (Long enough for personnel turn-over, but 2 people now have coordinating sets!). Sometimes on those small pouches I put on a fabric tag with a D-ring so that someone could attach their keys.

  5. Love your little bag and your fabric placement. I always get scared when I have to do a zipper but then it’s okay so guess I need to change my attitude and make some!

  6. this is really cute! I remember years ago when you made different pouches for your co-workers and they were all delighted. can’t even remember how long ago that was?
thinking of you as always. I hope Ahren’s new job is going well.
