Bag Making Continues

These are the two latest bags I finished and I am pretty pleased with both. I find that I prefer the boxy style and have mastered getting the corners to turn out properly. By "properly", I mean the same. The first ones I made were a little wonky. Both pouch sizes are handy. The smaller one is particularly good if you tend to carry a smaller handbag and just want to have a lipstick and a few other essentials with you. The larger one is great for traveling or for those who like a BIG purse.

I found some clip-on charms on Amazon that work great for the zipper pulls. The larger pink one is so cute. It seems to be made of polished stone. You don't get a lot of them in a package, and the color selection is limited, but I know I will use them. Could that peach be any better of a match with the patchwork? So cute.

The smaller bead charm came with a gazillion others in loads of different colors, so is probably the more versatile and better value.

Can you believe both bags are free patterns? The patchwork one, Nantucket Summer Mini Charm Bag, is free from Moda. I discovered it on Sherri's A Quilting Life blog. Here is the link to the pattern and Sherri's great video tutorial.

The smaller bag was actually made from two layer cake squares! This one, the Made With Love Patchwork Pouch, is another free Moda pattern. You can download the PDF from Fat Quarter Shop. The pattern is also shown as a patchwork option, but I just quilted a couple of layer cakes together and found it super quick and easy. There is a great YouTube tutorial for this one that Shabby Fabrics did.

What are you waiting for? Grab the free patterns and make up some adorable bags for all your gal pals for Valentine's Day! All you need are some zippers, fusible interfacing, and some cute zipper pull charms. You know you have plenty of fabric on hand to use up!

  1. Cute little totes! I’ve made Nantucket and it was a fun one to make. I’m going to have to get the other pattern too. I like boxed corners on totes and bags. It’s almost instant gratification to make a small tote! Hopefully your week isn’t as hectic as last week. Take care!

  2. That heart pull is perfect for that bag! I’m going to go download those patterns & check out zipper pulls online! Have a good week with plenty of sewing time!

  3. Your boxy bags are so sweet with those cute little zipper pulls/charms attached! How fun to be experimenting and having successful attempts.

  4. Do you use regular zippers, or a ByAnnie zipper? I know that Sherri (A Quilting LIfe) recommends ByAnnie zippers, which I used when I made that bag, but I’d be interested to know what you used. Btw, I use the large boxy bag to store all the cords and plugs for my iPad, phone, ear buds, Fitbit, etc. Keeping them together really helps! ❤️ your blog!
