Christmas is Different This Year

I've had a lot going on this year, particularly in the past six months. One thing I did manage to accomplish was to finish a quilt for my brother-in-law. When my sister was alive I made her a few quilts, which she so appreciated. Her attitude must have rubbed off on her husband because just over a year ago he started mentioning how much he enjoyed my quilts. And how, unfortunately, his dog had damaged the one on his bed that my sister had particularly loved.

Well, say no more. If you are a quilter, you don't need much encouragement to make a quilt for someone, especially if they seem sincere in their enjoyment of your efforts.

So, I made my brother-in-law Greg a red and white quilt, had it quilted in a Baptist Fan pattern, and finally got the binding on it in time to give it to him for Christmas. I am pretty sure he will love it and appreciate the love and effort that went into making it.

Are you gifting any quilts this year? Share in the comments, we'd love to hear about it!

  1. Not gifting any quilts this year, but I do have a couple table runners due back from the quilter that may be gifted. I always appreciate knowing someone loves to receive a quilt!

  2. Last Christmas my husband’s three great nephews (aged 10-13)were passionate about flying, particularly flying older vintage planes. I purchased panels with pre-WWII planes, sewed each panel into different colors, quilted them & made a pillowcase for each. Then I made a quilt for the two teenage girls, with a matching pillowcase, and finally one for my grandson, 3 years old, (Cars-themed). I’m finishing up the binding on the last one this week. All of the “kids” will go home with a quilt.
I had great fun making each quilt different colors for each boy & 2 completely different color/styles for the girls. My grandson loves “Cars,” the Movie, so that was an easy pick.

  3. I intended to get four quilts done by Christmas this year.
    So far nada.
I have the materials and the pattern/idea/plan for all four. One is started. The other three are identical (Christmas throw quilts).
It is dangerous to say Christmas 2025.
So my goal is to have all four to the quilter before June 1, 2025. That gives the quilter plenty of time. It gives my binder plenty of time. It gives me plenty of time to ship.
Glad you got your BIL’s done. That was a worthwhile project.

  4. Your brother-in-law is going to be so happy with that quilt! Our friends & family group draws names for the next Christmas after dessert & opening stockings. This year the final two are getting quilts from my husband & me, so that’s been fun. It’s actually easier than trying to think of stocking gifts from the store & I’ve had fun making them!🎁

  5. Yes, your BIL is going to really appreciate that wonderful quilt, and the love and care it represents.
You have certainly earned a quiet and scaled-down Christmas, with loved family closeby, but minimal hoopla!
No quilty gifting from me this year. I have 2 unfinished quilts that are just sitting waiting for me to get inspired again. Easy to ignore them when they are put away instead of spread out on the dining room table, LOL!

  6. One quilt made for my sister-in-law. She and her husband were in Paris for awhile last month and I had an old kit with a panel of a Paris cafe and some extra fabrics. So I’ve been working on that non-stop and should finish and mail it this week. Her husband is ailing and this was their “last” trip abroad.
What this means is I didn’t get to any other quilts, including one for our bed that is pinned and ready to quilt. Next year….

  7. I finished two table toppers to send off to my sisters. It was fun picking the Christmasy fabric. I hope they enjoy them.

  8. Lovely gift for your brother-in-law, he’s going to love his new quilt because it is for himself. I can understand he was upset about your sister’s quilt too.
I’m currently making my husband’s quilt (he whinged the children – well adult children) have quilts and he doesn’t. I’ve just one little border to go on and get it on the longarm. I started it in October last year – made great progress as the weather wasn’t good, but when it was good we had to do lots of jobs outside. Priorities – ugh!

  9. I made a “family “ quilt of flannel for my daughter. I designed blocks that depicted home, children, marriage, Christian characteristics. Then did some decorative embroidered stitches on some blocks. She loved it and it was an act of love for me. I did one after my son’s death 13 years ago for myself. It was great therapy for me.

  10. Twenty one quilts photographed, measured, folded & bagged separately. Leaving Florida on Friday for North Carolina families who lost belongings in the flooding. My quilting buddy & I have been busy bees for the past month getting them ready to go. I think we did miles of binding! We were so fortunate escaping major damage in the hurricanes this year, and know there is still a need.

  11. My youngest daughter asked me in June (she knows to give me plenty of time!) to make her a quilt for Christmas. She picked out the pattern and gave me the colors she wanted and I went from there. All I need to do now is bind it.

  12. What a nice quilt for your brother in law, I am sure he will appreciate it. I have one quilt ready to gift, one table runner and several cross stitch ornaments.
