Freezing Bacon

I don't think I ever imagined I would write a post called "Freezing Bacon", but here we are. Honestly, I have a
brilliant tip for you today!

Actually two tips. The first is this freezer bag holder I got on Amazon. It holds your bag open while you fill it with soup, leftovers, or in this case, bacon rolls. If you like to do freezer meal prep ahead of time you need these. They come four stands to a pack. And talk about a unique stocking stuffer for someone!

I have known forever that you can freeze bacon and have done it often. However I have just frozen the entire pack, which means when you unthaw it, you have a pound of bacon to deal with. Somewhere on Instagram I saw this tip where you can roll the slices up as shown above and freeze them in a bag, and just take out two or three bacon rolls at a time and leave the rest in the freezer. Thaw out the slice and cook it or chop it up for whatever you are cooking. No waste, right?

So Savemart had Farmer Johns thick-cut bacon on sale for Thanksgiving and I bought two packs of it. I rolled the slices all up and popped them in a freezer bag to use later when I need a few slices for a recipe.

I got my bag labeled and popped it into the new fridge/freezer out in the garage. Now that we have replaced our old fridge out there, I have vowed to be more responsible about what I stick in it and not lose track of things for two years.

My husband Dennis is coming home from the rehab hospital next Wednesday!  The day before Thanksgiving, how perfect is that? I plan to make a simple dinner just for the two of us. My other local market had frozen turkey on sale so I picked up a lovely turkey breast. While I was in line to pay the gentleman behind me inquired "Oh, that is so sweet. Is that a tiny little baby turkey?" He was serious, unfortunately. He was so amazed to learn you don't have to buy the whole turkey. This time of year there are so many husbands who never shop, who get sent out to the market for something their wives forgot. Heaven help us, and bless their hearts.

  1. I am thrilled to hear that Dennis will be home for Thanksgiving and that he has progressed so well. Today’s medicine is so amazing and we are blessed with the technologies we have today that keep us all in good hands. Enjoy your long weekend together and happy sewing . You are so amazing at taking on the Christmas blocks for the new quilt. This block is my lease favourite as mine never seem to turn out accurately, but your’s look perfect. You did one with Lori Holt and it was great also!
The little centres of Christmas themes are adorable!
    Happy Thanksgiving

  2. What a blessing that your husband is coming home and so smart of you to have a Thanksgiving for just the two of you. I am sure it will be a special, memorable day for you both. Enjoy!
I have had that same bag holder for years and LOVE it. I use it all the time. Also love the way it folds down for compact storage.

  3. So happy Dennis will be coming home. Archie will be thrilled to see his buddy. Glad you will be together and especially at home. I pray you can both navigate some challenges and enjoy each other’s company. How fitting the holiday is Thanksgiving.

  7. I am so glad that Dennis is well enough to come home. You must be so excited. I know Archie will be so excited to see him. I will have to order the bag holders. Thank you for the bacon tip also.

  8. So glad to hear your good news! Also sounds like you will keep it simple and not over do it.
My freezer is my main pantry these days. I use silicone candy molds on several different sizes to freeze measured portions of skim milk, marinara sauce, lime juice, lemon juice, buttermilk, and many other things that I can’t use fast enough in the regular container. I also cook meat and then freeze in various portions to add to casseroles and soup.
Bacon is a good suggestion. Thanks!

  9. Best news ever! I’m thrilled for you that Dennis will be home for Thanksgiving! So much to be grateful for.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, Dennis and your puppy.🦃❤️

  10. I’m guessing that nobody will be happier that he’s home than Dennis himself! 🎉 Pretty sure you & Archie will be, too, but for him it’s going to be especially wonderful! That’s a wise decision to have Thanksgiving dinner for the two of you while he settles in. I’ve had those bag holders for several years & they’re so useful. Have a good weekend getting some sewing done!

  11. The best news ever to hear that Dennis will be home for Thanksgiving! Nice and easy for just the two of you so that you can be flexible for whatever needs may arise. (eating dinner in your pajamas, fine!)
Great tip about the bag holders…. might have to get those too.

  12. Wonderful news that Dennis will be home for Thanksgiving! 🎉🥳 So very happy for you!!
Watch out Archie – your chair days are numbered 🤣
I’ve been using those bag holders for awhile now when I make freezer meals and they are excellent!!

  13. What a beautiful Thanksgiving you will have with Dennis home, a very Happy Thanksgiving indeed! 🦃🌻🦃 Archie is going to be so excited, his family will be all together I’ve never seen the bag holders before, genius! Freezing the bacon in little rolls is a great tip, thanks! Happy Thanksgiving!

  14. I am so happy for both of you that your husband is coming home for Thanksgiving. Reminds me of when I came home the day before Christmas .
Remind him to not get discouraged when he tires easily. After all, the bathroom is much farther away from the bed than it was in the rehab facility.🤣
Have a blessed Thanksgiving. joy Joseph

  15. Great news about your hubby. It’s just my husband and me this year so we are skipping the turkey and having chicken with a couple of the extra trimmings. It really isn’t about the meal and just being thankful for our blessings.

  16. That bag holder is so cool! But not nearly as cool as Dennis coming home! I’m so happy for you both! So much to be thankful for this year!

  17. I’m so glad your husband will be home for Thanksgiving!! About men grocery shopping – since Covid started my husband did all of the grocery shopping. I wasn’t in a grocery store for over 2 years! Imagine my shock when I saw how much everything cost! He still does most of the shopping. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I’m sure Archie will also be glad to be together again.

  18. lol on the man shopping and for what to do with leftover bacon – umm eat it 🤣🤣 Seriously it is a great idea but I’m notorious for just cooking the whole pack for extra bacon on the side 🤣 I will check out those bag holders though!
