Greetings From Edinburgh

This is what you see when you take the tram in Edinburgh. Honestly, we loved that city. The weather was spectacular, which we were told is unheard of, so we lucked out there. That is what happens when I decide to schlep around a raincoat and umbrella…

The bookstores in Edinburgh are just as plentiful and amazing as have been described. My favorite was Topping and Co Booksellers, which was two stories of rooms devoted to specific genres. This is just "Crime Fiction", which includes police procedurals, cozy mysteries, and thrillers.

I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I ended up purchasing four books, and goodness knows how I will get them home.

Another totally unique bookstore was Typewronger Books, a combination bookstore and typewriter repair shop. Seriously.

I made a small purchase here and the proprietor made me an origami elephant to take home to Eva.

Edinburgh is a lovely city, with fantastic walking tours, restaurants, and lovely people. One highlight was our tour of the Royal Yacht Brittania. That was a mind-blowing experience! It housed a crew of over 200, sailed around the world multiple times, hosted dignitaries from many different countries, and even had its own surgery. Can you imagine having your appendix out here? Look at that little porthole in the background.

Hope to post again soon with some of the highlights of our visit to London.

  1. A title I can recommend for you is “Confessions of a Bookseller” by Shaun Bythell. This fellow owns the largest used book store in Scotland, and this book, as well as the subsequent 1 or 2 titles, are his diary of trying to make it as a used bookseller. He comments daily on the number of sales (usually very low), travels he makes to find books for the shop, and observations of customers (he’s a very crusty fellow, and the book does contain some “language”). Nonetheless, the book was very entertaining and I enjoyed learning a bit about the used book trade.
I’m pleased that you’re having a great visit and vacation, and I enjoyed the photos and commentary on Edinburgh. I’m glad you lucked out on the weather there.

  2. Oh what fun seeing a man in a skirt (kilt) and a retro OR table. I have an old typewriter on my shelf at home. It reminds me of my college term paper cramming. You have an eye for seeing the unusual. Have fun.

  3. Sounds like you are having a fabulous time. Great pictures. Enjoying all the traveling vicariously! Stay safe and enjoy! (If can you do both?)

  4. It looks like you’re having a great trip! The OR suite on a ship is a bit unusual, but interesting! The ‘old fashioned’ typewriters are definitely a fun thing to see!
