Irish Soda Bread

We had a lovely family St. Patrick's Day celebration. My son-in-law Ryan and his wife usually invite us over for dinner on that day, and this year was no exception. He prepared the traditional corned beef and cabbage, and boiled potatoes, and I volunteered to bring Irish Soda Bread.

You might think making Irish soda bread is a bit of an ordeal, but it really is an easy process. It is actually a "quick bread", not requiring yeast or prolonged kneading. The recipe I use is from Sally's Baking Addiction, a very reliable baking recipe source. The recipe calls for seven ingredients: buttermilk, one egg, flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and butter. Raisins are optional, but I left them out due to family preferences.

I was able to whip the whole thing together in no time, with very little mess or drama. It tasted absolutely delicious. It is a humble bread, but it is completely worth the minimal effort to make it. I hope you will give it a try. I plan to add raisins next time when I make it just for my husband and me.

It looks like a meteor that fell from space, but I promise you, it is tender and slightly sweet, and totally delicious!

And, PS, Ryan's corned beef was amazing! Here he is in his kitchen, waiting for the corned beef to come out of the oven, with Eva in the foreground, proudly showing off the cupcakes she made for dessert.

  1. Eva’s cupcakes look so delicious! I believe she’s learning so much from you after noticing that some of them don’t have sprinkles…kind of like some people not liking raisins in the soda bread. Archie’s new ‘do is adorable, but how could you go wrong with that face?

  2. It sounds like you had a very nice St Patrick’s Day dinner. I didn’t realize that Irish Soda Bread was so easy, I thought it was a more complicated process. Archie is very handsome and Eva’s cupcakes were the perfect dessert. ☘️

  3. Very cute pictures of both Eva and Archie!!! Jan is right in her comment that Eva is learning a lot from you concerning baking and presentation! What a lovely gift you have given her. My family was unable to father this weekend so I’m tackling colcannon soup this coming Sunday and Irish soda bread. I agree that Sally’s Baking Addiction is a very reliable source!

  4. we didn’t get baking Tuesday last week. the cupcakes make up for that. Have you finished all the GS cookies yet? I was craving the mint ones last night. ;p
was archie invited to the party or is it too much chaos when the dogs get together? I took my beast for a bath yesterday and now he is molting. fur.is.everywhere. I will be doing serious brushing today.

  5. Oh my, Archie is so cute! And so is Eva! She made such tasty looking cupcakes. I agree that she is learning so much from you as far as baking/entertaining.
