Trial and Error

Last week I was experimenting with setting triangles for my Second Hand Clothes quilt.  I wanted just the right look, nothing too dark, something that coordinated well with the fabrics used within the quilt.  The differences in these photos may seem subtle, but honestly I thought my final choice was so much better than the first three attempts.  See if you agree.

This photo shows all black print setting triangles.  Too somber.

Here we have all red setting triangles.  I hated what happened when the triangles were next to an all red square.

Now I am having a go with green setting triangles.  About now I was pretty fed up with myself for wasting all that fabric; cutting out triangles and not liking the effect.

Then I had a light bulb moment.

I could use all the fabrics and mix them up.  Isn't this a better effect?  The body of the quilt is so scrappy, doesn't it make sense that the setting triangles carry out that theme?  It took me awhile, but I finally got there.

  1. I love, love, love scrap quilts! I usually make teeny, tiny blocks but I need a stash reducer. They say ” Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”- I think I will imitate yours. It looks great!

  2. Applause, applause for light bulb moments that come in time to save the day! Love the scrappy setting triangles! Do you suppose the corner setting triangles should all be the same color?
I got the binding sewed on the double bed quilt AMIL made for her SIL so hope to join the binding ends today and get the quilt clips on. Progress!
    Hugs!

  3. I had that idea with the second fabric you showed, but then you did all the work and led the way. Using them all – perfect. Love that pattern.

  4. Using all of the different colors was the perfect solution. It’s really a way to just continue the design rather than look like separate setting triangles. Beautiful.

  5. Perfect light bulb moment! I always get upset with myself for wasting all my fabric seeing what I like best but your solution worked out great!

  6. Your scrappy setting triangles are the perfect choice! It can be so satisfying when you find the right setting after struggling to find something you like.
